I take it back. If you've just seen that programme about Dunblane, then there's nothing to laugh about at all. And I can't help but be enraged at the NRA's response to sandy Hook of basically arming the teachers and the school kids.

best way to protect kids - only the cops have guns. End of.

i do agree with your general point donga,

BUT the cops over there are just as trigger happy with guns as criminals are, if they are accountable for their actions (debatable) and educated to ask questions first not just shoot then might work.

Yes. its absolutely absurd that they seem to think that the movie red dawn is inevitable and they all need to hold guns and the AVERAGE gun owner now holds 6 guns.

the amount that die by gun shot in the US is nuts. suicides, murders, accidental shootings, nutsoids killing people.... once the genie is out of the bottle peoepl with problems these days see the issues.

I think most of this actually goes back to wwii and guys coming back from war bring their m1s and 45's and whatnot home. I really think the americans have created a terrible society for themselves when its such a lovely country... mostly.

I've been in pretty rough areas in a lot of places. I've been in belfast in areas marked unionist, been in rough areas in liverpool and manchester, in germany..... but i'm telling you the rough areas in the US.... beats them all. You do not see guys just sitting on the street watching the world pass them by over here.

I'm sure the cops would be less trigger-happy if they felt that the guy they were about to caution for speeding or whatever wasn't about to pull a gun on them.
In reality, if there were very few guns in public ownership, then only specialist cops would need them- the same as here.
The problem can't be viewed in isolation though, it's part of a general sickness within the culture, imo.
As so often gets pointed out- guns don't kill people, people do. Although giving them the means to do so efficiently is spectacularly stupid, the whole thing is symptomatic of the enormous social and cultural rifts there. These divisions need addressing as a whole- guns are only part of the problem.

Some are but the vast majority are not. They are accountable for their actions. Don't let a few high profile media cases which are blown up to give shock value make you think otherwise.

Some cops do indeed have the "school bully" mentality. (They're also some of the worst drivers.) but by and large most are protecting themselves.

They're trained to be prepared for people doing the worst and to suspect everyone having a gun... Because that's how they stay alive.

Take most of the guns off the street and that will relax somewhat.

    Probably.

The falicy of gun ownership is you get to clean and oil the gun that is most likely to shoot you.

It's crazy. It's like tieing your own noose.
