Only if the drive didn't lead anywhere, or if the property was permeable.

Do you think the supermarkets should take some of the blame? They have huge car parks.

Without a doubt, particularly the out of city centre ones, that are often built on flood plains.

The larger out of town places have to take care of their own drainage issues, so as to have no impact, that's why you get the ponds like the one at St Andrews Quay.

They should, but they don't always, at least not effectively. A pond doesn't really take the place of the surface area soak away from fields. Banging it through tubes instead of seeping through to the water table are very different mechanisms.

There are also cases of developments breaking up the natural flow of water, causing it to divert to less permeable areas.

In Scotland, it's part of planning law that all new developments (other than a single dwelling) must have no impact on an areas drainage. Presumably we'll adopt something similar here at some point, at least in areas prone to flooding.

The rules are similar, as is the application. While you're googling, have a look at where the flooding is to find out how robust that is.

It's incredible really, when you look at what's required by way of a flood risk assessment for normal scale applications.

    Meanwhile, back on topic

This idea is excellent, particularly the point about working with flood routes rather than against them
If you go in the crypt under Holy Trinity there are two small streams that run under the building and cross each other
They were there before it was built and so instead of re routing with a chance they'd wear stuff away to get back on track they just built over / round them
That's one reason why the building is still fine 700+ years later

Don't think it's what it once was...I assume they don't dredge it as regularly. When the weed cutters went down the water, the fish would go mental for a day or two and take any bait offered.
