Real mods were people of Jazz, soul and ska not rock. You be more likely to see them dancing to Wilson picket than the Kinks. Though those sort of bands did have a big Mod following, it's was black music who held a true place in hearts of the Mods.
Aye, They did share musical interest the two, they may not like to admit it but the was a cross over for Mods and Rockers at ska and rock level. Certainly wouldn't call the Specials Pure Ska though. I think the took elements of Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, punk and rock to create 2 Tone music but Reggae and Rocksteady was defo the strongest influence I hear from it much like ska but it it's definitely different to me, the other subtle influence makes it differant imo, that's the beauty of art though, different people take different things. I think Dammers fused his own genre that bridged a gap which created an appeal between Mods and Rockers. We're talking late 70s here though where both Mods and rockers were both well into a stage of spliting into subcultures themselves. Love The Specials. Such a unique group.
I love his posts and he is one reason why I pop in every day, never meet your Dad but it would be a pleasure I am sure, after all we must be "of an age" and have a lot in common judging by his posts.
Two Tone Specials were pure Ska, UB40 were Reggae, both were crap imo, listen to the real stuff and note the diff.
So not true imo. Dammers himself said acknowledged the punk influence in his music especially culturally, socially and politically. Hear beyond the sound of the tune and listen to the message.
Yeh, he would say that wouldnt he, in truth I have not listened to that much, but seen them both live so maybe I am wrong, lol.
