http://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/mar/02/premier-league-clubs-breakway-meeting Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U., Man City, and Liverpool have been in talks to discuss ways to ensure their 'ever presence' in the Champions League. Let's find new and better ways to makes sure we have even more money and domination over the game. Money continues to spoil our great game. I'd be very tempted to tell them that if they want guarantees of always being in the CL then they can form their own league and play each other and forget about being part of the English leagues. The rest of us will stick to watching football in a proper competition where teams like Leicester can upset the status quo every so often.
Well said. Unfortunately football is eating itself. The big clubs are like black holes sucking in all the money. It's got nothing to do with merit, only money. Chelsea and Man City are there because of money alone, Liverpool have finished above us once in seven years is it? Another reason why I'm enjoying this season so much. As much as I don't like their football I'd love Leicester to finish in the top 4, and as much as I don't like the club I'd really love West Ham to do so too. To have only one of those "big 5" actually make the top four would be brilliant! There's also so many other interlinked things. FFP abuse, Chelski having three teams on loan etc.
Arsenal have distanced themselves from the notion of a Super League, probably because Wenger saw the other clubs involved and realised they'd still finish no higher than fourth. I also saw it mentioned somewhere during the week that UEFA were considering having Champions League games played in the US or Asia, which is worrying...because it implies somebody at UEFA saw Richard Scudamore's proposal for Game 39 and thought "Hmm, good idea."
It just shows that, as usual, it's all about money, the rest is conversation. With the recent influx of money into the premier league, the playing field has been leveled somewhat. The so called 'big five' don't like this. Noisy upstarts, like Leicester, and hopefully Spurs, come along and steal CL places that are "rightfully" their's! Answer? Let's form another league and keep it all to ourselves. The idea of them joining a so called European super league is currently preposterous, anyway. These are clubs that can't even dominate their domestic league! What chance have they got in a European league against Barca, Real, or Bayern?
We've gone back to the dark days of the G14, as there was talk/threats of forming a breakaway super league back in 2003. It looks more ominous when you look at the teams involved G14 clubs Ajax Arsenal Barcelona Bayer Leverkusen Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund Liverpool Inter Juventus Lyon Man Utd Olimpique Marseilles Milan Paris St Germain Porto PSV Los Ladrones do Madrid Valencia Teams involved in proposed super league Arsenal Atletico Madrid Barca Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund Chelsea Inter Juventus Liverpool Man City Man Utd Milan PSG Los Ladrones do Madrid Schalke That's twelve of the G14 clubs, and if you excuse my terrible poker metaphor all it looks like is the Chavs and City were able to buy in to the table while Ajax, PSV and Porto could not.
Why are Chelsea and man city in there, historically there are clubs who have won more trophies, everton, sunderland, Villa all have more league titles than city and chelsea. I don't really get how these clubs got selected.
Some time back American owners voiced their opinion that the EPL should do away with demotion and promotion We should be careful who we allow in to ownership
they'll be wanting stadiums built on Mars next to make it a truly intergalactic league.......with Darth Vader's grandson in charge!
Spurs are the next club in line in the PL finance league and a top 20 European financial powerhouse. If Spurs win the league, the financial rewards flowing from that will put you even higher in the money table. The club won't shy away from any invite to sit round the same negotiating table. So don't treat it as an "us and them" issue. But anyway, that"s not my point because I agree with the sentiments expressed here. Sport loses much of its appeal if competition is taken away. It has been eroded in most European leagues. The PL is no exception, although this season has shown that there is a chance for other, so called lesser clubs - and the league is much more interesting because of it. There needs to be a fairer distribution of revenues across the board. That can only happen if the regulators legislate to do it. But who would trust FIFA, UEFA and the national league associations to get their heads together and work something out? They run scared of the big clubs and always will.
Luke, with no relegation, and no promotion, what's to play for? In my view, after a 8-10'weeks it would be pretty clear that say, Barca, were going to win the league. So, What's to play, or pay for in the case of fans when that happens?
In 1992 when discussing Sky's bid to cover PL football, Alan Sugar commented that the value of the coverage was irrelevant, the clubs would piss it all up the wall on player's wages anyway. I don't care for the man but he wasn't wrong. The more money that comes in,the less sense it makes. Clubs buying players to stop others doing so. Chelsea loaning out 4 teams worth of players to other clubs whilst buying 16 year olds they don't want or need. English clubs owned by the slime of humanity, full of foreign players being watched by tourists.
I wonder how many countries wish they had our pyramid system? I keep hearing the Spanish League is the best in the world.Really?Take away the top 4.....and there's nothing there. I find the Italian League totally boring.....and look at PSG in France. They are Champions already. No one can come close! Hope PSG finally do something in the Champions League........! ......and I love the end of season playoffs. That one was brilliant.
How true and worth remembering every time some pundit trots out the shallowest argument that because the two best teams in Germany or Spain are (might be, let's see on Thursday) better than our top teams, then therefore their league must be better than ours.
It is us v them, but not Spurs v this particular bunch of clubs. It's normal fans, the people that love the game, against the arseholes that don't give a **** about it, but would like to milk it for all it's worth. They'll do what they always do. Squeeze something dry while hyping it up to the heavens, then take their money and move onto the next thing.
This would be an absolute disaster. The end of English football as we know it. Every other club would become a feeder club, and with the prospect of never winning anything - with all the best players wanting to go to one ofmthe elite clubs - the non elote clubs would slowly die, and the game with it.
This would be an ideal way for the new boss of FIFA to show that he cares about the game. He should declare that this competition would be contrary to (new?) FIFA rules and any players taking part would be banned from any of their sanctioned competitions for life, along with managers and owners. They could also not award TV rights to any company that televises this non- competition. I won't hold my breath though.
