I can't remember what interview he admitted knowing she was 15 in. That will be a key point to the rights and wrongs of what was said and known.

The club is caught between a rock and a hard place. The situation as it is leaves a lot of question marks over what has gone on. In an ideal world the club would be able to back up it's claims by pursuing legal action against both Johnson and his QC, and if necessary the police. However, they will also not want to protract their association with this whole episode. They have also said that they will be making no further comment, but with the new statement from the police it would probably be in the club's interest to clarify that they weren't aware that sexual activity had taken place with an underage girl, rather than just saying they weren't aware that Johnson was going to plead guilty.

On the other hand, if Margaret Byrne is shown to have lied then the club needs to act quickly and remove her. Our clubs are so much more than the people who run them, but their actions attract publicity to our clubs and can tarnish their name (we know that all too well up the road). As usual, the fans are the ones left out of the loop and will be the last to know (if ever) what really went on.

What could Byrne lie about .. An accusation was made to the police , the police passed it on to Byrne ......did it suddenly become a fact instead of an accusation when Byrne was told . What happens when Byrne dismisses Johnson and it 's found out that the girl lied and Johnson and his blood sucking lawyers have a financial field day at the expense of the club . It's not what happened as found out in the long run but it happens a lot to get money from people who have it by people who don't .
The sh:t that Sunderland and its fans have had to endure because of a perverted , lying footballer is incredible and if I was the mod around here there would be a wholesale banning from the " Gotcha " fools roaming their board , including a mod or two .

 

Fully agree. Our mods won't do it though, even though every other boards mods are more than happy to treat our posters like dog ****, they never return the favour.

Not saying right or wrong, it's been debated a lot and I like 3 of our mods, so don't want it to start again.

 

I never said Byrne had lied. I said 'if' she had. The dispute is about how much evidence she received. She would have been presented with any evidence the police had from their initial interview with Johnson as part of normal safeguarding procedures. Her account has been called into question by Johnson ( a proven liar) and his QC. The tone of the police statement (at least as it was reported) seemed to suggest an element of hostility towards the club's position too. My position is that it would be good for the club to find a way to make this whole situation and the dirt that is being thrown at them go away as it is an unwanted distraction and very possibly a slanderous accusation against them. I am making no judgements about who is telling the truth. What I am saying is that the whole situation is a mess, and that as usual the fans will be the last (if ever) to find out what really went on. This has never been about point scoring, but merely about commentating (with a great deal of sympathy towards Sunderland and it's fans) about the whole sorry situation.
