Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has told BBC Newcastle that Adam Johnson's guilty plea on a child sex charge was a "massive shock" to him.

On Wednesday, Johnson was convicted of one count of sexual activity with a girl aged 15.

He had previously admitted grooming the girl and one charge of sexual activity, after which the club sacked the midfielder.

"All I knew was he was pleading not guilty on all charges," said Allardyce.

"It was a massive shock and the club has obviously given out a statement [about the change of plea and the club’s knowledge of it].

“My position was just what I'd heard from Adam, but him changing his plea was a shock while with the end verdict you can have nothing but sympathy for the victim.

"Justice has been done, he's let everybody down."

Sounds lovely. I love big dogs and where I live now there's plenty of open countryside to walk them.

I hope the club does'nt receive any fall out for unsuspending and playing him while a police investigation was taking place - think they are in a very dodgy place as by their action were saying he was innocent before police had finished - any legal views out in the Not606 family ?

Of course. Innocent until proven guilty. That only happened when he changed his plea.

They acted on the advice of the PFA and lawyers so absolutely no chance of that.
All we will have is the usual suspects trying to use this to put the boot in.

She`ll be sitting in a wet patch mate.

Unbelievably pro mag when supposed to be an unbiased regional presenter.

If we won 10-1 and the mags lost 1-10 we would barely get a mention and the mags goal shown from 15 different angles (as would the one goal against us).

She`s well known for it mate.

That imo is well worth remembering and got me thinking from a police point of view. Bearing in mind that Byrne was not acting for Johnson in a legal capacity there was no solicitor/client confidentiality.

Following on from that, does it follow that the police could have dragged Byrne into the witness box and made to give details of the meeting? Refusal and she would have been charged with contempt of court, the club charged with withholding evidence and all that sort of thing?

Obviously the police had enough evidence anyway but if there was extra brownie points to be had they`d have been after them surely. Lovely extra court cases for their crime figures.

No idea where I`m going with this, just me thinking in a different direction.

    As per. <doh>

He did NOT tell the club everything...if he had he would have told them he was gonna plead guilty...but instead he told them he was innocent of grooming and of sexual contact with a child.
The disgrace here is **** man himself and only him. The club may have made a mistake but given how rare this situation is that is kind of forgiveable ... not only was he lying to them they were also trying to act under the premise of innocent until proven guilty.
