What the hell difference does it make what the odds are? What do you think the odds were on Nott Forest winning the top flight title, and then going on the become the first ever English side to win and retain the top European trophy (of the time) in successive seasons, when they were sat in the equivalent of todays Championship?

I don't see how any rational argument can possibly discount that as a factor? ... becomes even clearer if you put it this way - how did the home nations get on in the World Cup or European Championships in the late 70s and early 80's? ... answer ... pretty poorly ... where were the players from nations who were successful plying their club football during those periods? ... abroad ... ... so in acheiving his title wins Clough, primarily, had to build a team capable of besting the best of British players ... the contrast now is that to win the EPL a team has to be capable of beating teams containing some of the best players in the world; i.e from countries winning the World Cup or European Championships ...

No, they don't. They represent the market's expression of confidence in the likelihood that an event will or will not happen. If the confidence is misguided, so are the odds. That's why, every year, LFC are odds on to win the title.

Probability, yes, but not in the scientific sense. It's probabilities according to market confidence. Just because ten million Mousers blindly put their shirts on LFC winning the title this season, raising 'Pool's odds to 2/1, doesn't mean that they have a 50% chance of winning the title.

The odds compilers are very scientific, they're data nerds, they don't just pull numbers out their arse....their odds reflect the probabilities, which in turn is based on the relevant facts. ...and those FACTS came up with Leicester as being 5000/1 outsiders at the outset. What do you think were the "starting odds" on Forest winning the old Div 1 title, and then going on the win the equivalent of the CL in successive seasons after that, the year after being promoted, when they were sat in Div 2? In the past ten years 5 different clubs have finished in the top 3 and only 3 clubs have won the league. It's been a closed shop. In the ten years prior to Forest winning the league, 10 different clubs finished in the top 3 with 6 clubs winning the league. Much more open shop. Teams like Spurs have talked for years about "cracking the top 4" like it was some kind of mountainous challenge. If Leicester don't just crack the top 4 but win the whole ****ing thing then it will be one of the greatest achievements in football history.
