I hang up when they ask me how I am or how my day is going. I know they don't really care, and no important call would start with this.
Yeah, though I do feel for the people doing it - they're just reading a script and I suspect half of them at least realise how **** it sounds.
I'm reminded of a survey taken on preferred accents over the phone, when taking advice from a technical support person. The result was that ROI [Irish] accents were the considered the best overall [1990's]. So one day, I rang Hewlett Packard [HP] about one of their printers not working. As an IT person, I had already been through every fathomable check on this item and, tbh, if I'd charged the customer what it cost in my time they could have bought an entirely new printer. But that was my problem. So, as I say, I rang HP to be presented with a molly coddling Irish chap who treacly oozed his advice down the phone until I couldn't stand it any longer [he'd told me zero that I hadn't done myself and I'd listed all the things in order beforehand]. The one thing I will give him though was that he kept his cool especially as I explained to him that he'd completely wasted my time and money. We wished each other a good day and I handed the printer back telling the customer it was beyond economic repair. Unfortunately for my conscience and pocket, that advice had to be free.
A 7.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia, no immediate reports of damage but potential tsunami danger.
Hate it when they do that. Just wasting more of my time. I usually say fine thanks, goodbye and hang up. It must be a sole destroying job as most people seem to either hang up or get nasty. I do know a few people who just put the phone to one side and leave it for ages before just putting it back on the hook. Stops them bothering other people for a while. I appreciate it gives people jobs but I don't think that it should be allowed just because it keeps people employed. Surely we have enough entrepreneurs to come up with something better. None of this is a dig at you JWPGC.
None taken, why do you think it shouldn't be allowed? There's loads of great services being offered out there if people were given more of a chance
I have some sympathy for the people who do these jobs but I also put the phone to one side to take up the line and (hopefully) increase the phone bill of the company calling. I particularly like doing that when I get those PPI calls that just play a pre-recorded message. Some of these cold calls are quite dodgy though. When she was at uni my wife had a phone that was registered in her dad's name. She received a cold call from someone who said it was about "the accident Mr Green has been in." She assumed her dad had been hurt in a car accident and broke down in tears. One of my first jobs was door to door gas/electric sales. I pretty much hated it but stuck it out for a few weeks. When I first started the company we were selling for was legitimately the cheapest option in the area so it was tolerable - I knew everyone I signed up was definitely going to save money - but then they increased their prices and life got much harder. I was astounded by the people I worked with and for though. I was technically self-employed but actually worked for a marketing company who had a contract with a power company. The attitudes of the management were incredible. On my first day I went out with my supervisor and he pressured me into signing up an elderly woman. Inevitably a complaint was made and he justified it to the guy investigating the complaint by saying it was important he got me "off the mark" on my first day. He was one of the better people at the company too. Every morning we had a big group meeting and the Area Manager's idea of motivating people was to make most of the team laugh by picking on one person each morning and taking the piss out of them. A couple of the staff were questionable too. There was a guy called "Ratty" who left to become an estate agent and on his last week went around signing up empty houses using false names and someone else who'd previously been convicted of armed robbery. He was a really lovely guy but it seemed amazing to me that a company was prepared to employ an armed robber in a job that involved knocking on doors and going into people's houses.
Worked in a shop and they tried to make us use a script. I carried on playing it by ear. If there is a queue of people, they do not want you to use words by rote, so that by the time you reach them they have heard the words several times. People prefer to be treated as individuals. They also said we should thank people for waiting rather than apologise for the wait. My answer to that was that if thanked for waiting, people think they had no bloody choice, whereas an apology usually makes the average Brit say: That's alright. You may have gathered from this that I wasn't the easiest member of staff to manage. Partly true...I would always cooperate and do my best to help the manager/supervisor, but I wasn't going to do anything I considered stupid.
They could always get a worthwhile job. Asda always need their shelves filling. Do I feel sorry for them? No. **** them.
There may well be. I suppose I object to being called about things I have not asked about. If I want something, as with most people, I will make contact when it is convenient to me. That way I'm not in the middle of something when someone calls to chat to me as if they are my mate, tell me about something I really couldn't care less about and then expect me to buy something immediately on the phone - never going to happen. My parents have been called about supposed accidents and got into a right panic thinking that someone was wrapped around a lamp post somewhere. Older people are less likely to expect people to phone them with scams. It can cause a lot of upset.
Yeah the accident ones are certainly funny. I had someone ring me the other day asking about my partners car accident. My partner has never driven n doesn't hold a license, a lot of guesswork involved with some of these companies. On other side I used to go door-to-door for charity and I loved every minute of that, raised alot of money in a short space of time At the end of the day in any industry you're gonna get good people & bad people and imo you can't generalise a whole industry based on a small sample of experiences.
Being firm with charities at the moment as they can be hard to shake off. I had three direct debits at one point....now prefer to put something in every collection box for charities I like. I got rid of one charity that I had previously supported by saying that I had fallen on hard times and was simplifying my financial situation. I don't get roped in anymore....stop doorstep callers dead before they can start now.
When I was working once on behalf of British Heart Foundation, I was knocking in Portsmouth and had a lady come to the door saying her husband had died of a heart attack so would love to give a regular donation. She invited me in while she found a statement with her s/c & a/n on it. When she brought it out there was about 10-15 different charities on there I refused to sign her up despite her being keen as it was clear she had been guilt tripped into signing upto loads equating almost £150 a month. Also gave her some advice that she could cancel them by contacting her bank and without contacting charities direct. My team leader (on site manager) tried having a go at me for not getting the sign up Whereas the actual manager said I did the right thing, again shows how different types of people can exist in the same organisation.
I had the same reaction the first time I watched it; I found it all rather baffling and pointless. Ladt year I watched it for a second time and enjoyed it so much I had to watch it again soon after. I don't think there's ever been another film wuite like it; which might explain why it takes some getting your head round. Despite it's post Vietnam, post Watergate modernism, it's actually a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood.

How can people live with themselves....as we must presume they are 'fans.' Complete side issue....have new neighbour, lovely lady....but has dog that barks all the time when left. Lots of you will tell me that it isn't the dogs fault....but meanwhile have you got a baseball bat I can borrow.
