You compare the points won in the game to the points that would have been won without the goals/assists by the particular player.

Many of Benteke's goals turn 0-0 into 1-0, winning 2 points. Most of Lukaku's goals turn big wins into bigger wins, or big losses into smaller losses, winning #****all points.

 

Sounds good. But I am not sure you can simply reduce the value of a goal by its points contribution like that.

do you give value to the second goal in a 2-0 win? The second goal is important because it kills the game off when the opposition is threatening an equaliser. The first goal is of course important. So I would say both goals contribute to the points. In a 3-1 win, I would value all the three goals as contributing to the points. Something to do with the impact upon the opposition of the extra goal.

My own very subjective assessment is that if the margin of victory is 2 or less then ALL goals scored are important. If it is 3 or more then, then that goal and other goals after that do not contribute.

 

All stats are imperfect. Even the idea of a goal scorer in a team game can be misleading. So you invent the assist. But the assist might not have been the difficult part, so you invent the key pass. And so on, trying to quantify things.

For me the points per goal stat #confirms what is obvious to the eye and what I say almost every week. When a goal is needed Lukaku is nowhere to be found. When a goal doesn't change things Lukaku will gladly knock one in.

Usually the top goal scorer is found in a team near the top of the table. Throughout the season Lukaku has been top, or second, goalscorer but is only just now top half of the table. On goal difference. Having played a game more than other teams.

The simple fact is Lukaku's goals have got Everton nowhere in the league and nowhere in the cups. They'll make a decent end of season DVD though.
