We probably needed someone like this 5-10 years ago when we were under financial restraint, but dot see him having much impact now. He could be good for Everton, if they could get a stadium build without financially crippling you.

Not my take on the fella after reading up on him and the general opinion of Arsenal fans towards him in comparison to their view on Kroenke

His open letter of a few years back doesn't tally with a man more interested in dipping his bread than winning pots mate.

It's a pity that you decided to personalise this subject rather than to engage in intelligent debate.

In a last-ditch attempt to get something sensible from you, can you, at the very least, state whether or not you consider it will go down well with Gooners (in their fraught relationship with Wenger) if either Spurs or Leicester win the title?

If you don't want it 'personalised' don't invite such a response by making stupid comments like you being 'neutral' where anything to do with Arsenal is concerned ...

In response to the question now posed ... the first thought of any real neutral, IMHO, is that Merson is a tit ... his reaction is pure unintelligent knee-jerk akin to that of the most blinkered and parochial of fans ... having sat amongst Gooners recently I was wryly amused by similar comments as the match progressed (our fans are no different in terms of eclectic mix by the way - all teams are) ... apoplectic screaming for dismissals of Leicester players at every turn ... yet somehow being able to justify Coquelin (already on a yellow) running across half the pitch to barge an unsuspecting Mahrez in the back for leaving the field at his own pace when being substituted ... as Mahrez 'deserving' such ... the nature of football tribalism ..

Merson would rather believe that should Arsenal lose the title race to Spurs or Leicester it has to be down to poor management by Wenger rather than good management and even better 'team' performances by Spurs / Leicester ... he would probably feel less aggreived if Citeh were to take the title because of the money at their disposal ... but he is just plain wrong IMHO.

If Spurs or Leicester win the title it wiill be because their teams were the best teams over the course of the whole season ... once the players take to the field the major responsibility for the result is theirs ... not the managers. Was Wenger to blame for the non existent marking for United's second? ... or should international defenders have sorted themselves out and picked up? You can probably guess what I think.

However, what you write is complete tosh.

The fact is, that either Leicester or Spurs finishing above Arsenal, let alone winning the league, would be an abject failure on Wenger's part.

Remember how the Gooners were rubbing their cocks when they got Woe-zil and Giroud? Walnut and Oxo coming back to fitness was also seen as the third of a three-star alignment this season, and everything was pointing to a Gooner title, even with a full-strength Chelsea, £ity and United (and with a possible resurgence of 'Pool). We were written completely out of the equation, as we always are, that was to be expected. But Leicester coming in has really highlight just how dreadful Wenger has been these past 10 years. Sure, it would have been bad enough for Spurs to finish above Arsenal, but he could probably have survived that. However, with Leicester there above him, with a team worth less than the money he spent in the Summer, let alone the countless £billions he has spent on fees and wages over the last decade, chasing the title - that would be a demonstration of abject failure.

Merson is perfectly right to say what he has, and he is speaking what every single Gooner (outside of this site) is saying.

The absolute worst finish to this season for Gooners (and Wenger's chances of staying in a job) would be for Spurs to finish as champions and for Leicester to finish second, above £ity in third, and United in 4th.

If the senile old fcuker stays in a job after that, just watch the mass exodus of plastics from Arsenal to £ity.
 
I'm of the mind that Wenger is partially to blame. He is, and always has been far too pig headed for his own good. He simply cannot accept that he's got it wrong, despite all evidence screaming that he does. The game is always evolving, but Wenger doesn't tactically evolve with it.

Any premiership player should be of a standard to be able to understand and follow basic instructions. If they can't, then they need to be replaced.

Merson is a tit ... he has a right to say whatever he wants, as do you, within freedom of speech boundaries ... doesn't make it right ... but if you agree with his opinion that's OK too ... I'm sure a large number of Spurs supporting neutrals will too <laugh> ... but I susepect that the majority of non-Spurs supporting neutrals (with any modicum of footballing knowledge won't) and that's MY opinion ...

Arsene Wenger is not responsible for us having only lost 4 times in our last 38 premier league games (in fact his team is responsible for 2 of those losses <laugh>)... if that was the season ... we'd be champuions ... the credit goes partly to Pearson, partly to Ranieri ... but more so to the team that we have and their performances on the pitch ...

Similarly Wenger is not responsible for the excellent season Spurs are having ...

You seem to be obsessed with where you finish vis-a-vis Arsenal ... you have a distinct inferiority complex that continually undermines any valid opinion you might have ... ... not even having a WUM now ... just saying it as it is ...

I'd agree with a lot of this ... but only one team can win the title each season ... not doing so is not necessarily failure ... just means somebody else was better ... if we should win the league this season (big big IF I hasten to add) it will be because Ranieri and our players collectively got ir right ... not because Arsene Wenger, Pochettino, Rodgers/Klopp, Mourinho/Hiddink, van Ghoul and Pellegrini all got it wrong ... otherwise Chelsea winning last season had nothing to do with Mourinho ... and his team ... the rest of us hust fcuked it up <,laugh>

I guess what I'm saying is that at one time Wenger was the 'tactical benchmark', as it were. The game has moved on, evolved, and Wenger is no longer the benchmark.

His teams are fragile, both physically and mentally. They do well against sides that allow them to play, but struggle against those who get stuck into them, or don't allow them time on the ball.

Has either Poch or Ranieri been in the Prem at a so-called top club for the past decade, trying to win the Prem, and having spend £billions on wages in the process?

I'd agree with just about all of that ... and if he gets the sack it should be for such a rationale ... not because some bitter bellend ex-player takes umbrage about the prospect of Arsenal's hereditary closest rival or a complete outsider having a remarkable season winning the title ... <ok>

I'd agree that Merson is a tosspot of the first order. I'm just surprised if anybody takes anything he says seriously. I suppose some of the more unstable Gooners might, which should provide some entertainment for the rest of us!.
