Superb film. Captures the atmosphere of 60s folk scene brilliantly (I imagine).

Great speech. Glad he mentioned Tom Hardy as well as the others, and what a brilliant, short rant about climate change.

I don't recall ever watching a film about space travel and relativity before.

I'd heard that DeCaprio had turned his Oscar acceptance speech into a reminder about the environment. Good for him. Of course, it was also a shot at Republican wannabees who still deny mankind has done anything wrong.

No, neither have I. At least not to the extent that it actually becomes part of the story. After all, comic book space fims like Star Wars and Star Trek should be illustrating it all the time.

Spotlight took Best Film though. I certainly thought it was the better film. In fact, I think I said something along the lines of "if it doesn't win the Oscar then something is amiss." Well it did.

Chris Rock was very funny throughout his presentation of the show. The lack of black actor nominations was perfect for him because it allowed him to go into territory that only he or other black comedians could dare go.

Showed on the BBC thousands of migrants arriving on a boat. It then showed migrants living in tents and just laying on grass and calling it home. Nearly all the borders have been closed off and the ones that aren't only allow a few people through each day. So the migrant population is getting even worse. Greece is basically being allowed to die by the EU.

Yep, rightly won. Thing is, people are going to be watching this from now on expecting to be super-wowed by it. Don't be. It is just a really solid film about a very serious issue that is still almost entirely overlooked.

Try watching Simon Reeve's series about Greece. It was broadcast very recently and should still be on iPlayer. It gives a balanced view of how Greece has been screwed and how it is coping and will continue to cope. And it shows all the bits you're talking about too. Indeed, Reeve himself finds that he can't stand by and not help people off a tiny inflatable boat. He interviews them and makes a connection. It's one of the reasons why his series are unmissable.

Might I suggest Dave that you use the review as a motivator to watch the film and make up your own mind? It's not rubbish. Neither is it the best film in the world either. You'll watch far worse films in your lifetime and think they're ok.

There's a difference between a film which is truly poor and one that doesn't appeal to certain people. For example, any review that I may make of anything I've watched and recommended or not is MY view. That should only be a pointer, not your entire motivation.

It's all subjective. Except in the case of the FIFA movie I suppose. Not even the director bothered defending that.

Yeah, I'm still going to watch that at some point. Just to see how bad it is. I bet it's fairly well shot and well acted, but the story is the appalling thing. Definitely not a Plan 9 From Outer Space contender. :)

That's a very good point, TSS, and I'll take it on board. I have a copy to watch and I'll give it a go and see what I think. To be honest, I sometimes struggle with sci-fi films (I also thought 2001 - A Space Odyssey was over-hyped - good book, awful film), so I don't know what to expect. I have The Martian too, so it'll be interesting to compare! Thanks for the advice!
