Wow, a Youtube compilation. There's no arguing with that, is there? Nobody's suggesting that Gomes is flawless and you can clearly see that I've already stated that he shouldn't start the season, but virtually all of what you've said is ridiculous, Lidls. He doesn't command his box as well as he should and he punches too often, but a lot of his mistakes last season were down to the fact that he was playing whilst injured. He was taking painkillers during games, which is a ludicrous situation even if you're desperate, but when you've got two good keepers going spare, then it's just poor decision making. Redknapp made a number of mistakes last season and persisting with an obviously injured and confidence-damaged Gomes was one of his worst. Pletikosa is a very experienced goalkeeper, who had already notched up a number of games with his numerous compatriots at Spurs, but he only featured in one game. Cudicini looked assured and competent when given a run at the end of the campaign. Poor choices were made.
It could also be " Brad, can't put you in straight away, we'll wait for the 1st howler...shouldn't be too long!"
Pletikosa was only on loan and he's returned to Spartak Moscow, Lidls. I think that he's currently on trial at Celtic. I have no idea why he never really got a chance, to be honest. He played one game in the Carling Cup against Arsenal and didn't do a lot wrong.
I think he came on when Gomes got sent off against Inter too. He's already trialed once with Celtic this summer and they decided against going for him and it's only since they missed out on other targets that he's being reconsidered, so perhaps he's not the player we thought hew was last season.
To answer your question from yesterday Spurf about Gomes and my confidence. I'm sorry to take so long to answer but as somebody said that he made some excellent saves too. Last season I feel was a one off for our strikers and Gomes. I just do not see it happening again. He's a good stopper and when a goalkeeper makes an error it's usually fatal and a goal is conceded whereas strikers are given more chances to put things right if they miss open goals. Also I don't see anybody better on the horizon ok?
I think having the threat of Friedel will improve Gomes. I never thought Carlo was trusted by Harry, so he probably didn't think his place was under threat, now he knows that a run of bad form and he could lose his place for a while. Gomes has shown in patches that he is a great keeper, just needs to cut out/reduce the howlers.
Er - surely if his problem is confidence/concentration, having more competition could make him nervous and therefore worse. However I'm hoping that training alongside Friedel will allow some of Friedel's strengths and experience to improve Gomes.
Gomes has too many chances in my opinion. Friedel should start as number 1 and remain number 1. Keep Cudicini as backup and sell Gomes to raise some funds.
Definitely. I've wanted him 3rd choice at Norwich for this season, to allow Steer to go out on loan. We could just do what Stoke did, and play him in every cup game - he doesn't mind sitting on the bench or reserves (shown last season).
His other problem is he gets injured a lot, but this is overlooked time and again. Of course, that leads to a follow up question as to why Ramos and Hary haven't rested him for a few games. For example, when Gomes picked up hip injury against Young Boys, why didn't Cudicini come on? Gomes was clearly in pain, he had to have the nearest defender take goal kicks, and probably wouldn't have been able to dive for shots, but he played the full 90 minutes regardless.
Do we need a 3rd keeper? We had Pletikosa last season and he played once. I know failing to plan is planning to failure etc but I think Friedel and Cudicini would be fine.
Harry clearly thought an injured Gomes was better than Cudicini and Pletikosa. I think Friedel is definitely an improvement on Cudicini but Gomes is our number 1. Neither of the others could hold down a regular place in a top 4 team as Gomes did the season before last. He also played most of the matches in our good CL campaign.
