    Meanwhile back at the referendum:

An old quote has re-emerged in an Anthony Hilton column for Thursday's Evening Standard, which may give you pause for thought as to how you vote in the EU referendum:

"I once asked Rupert Murdoch why he was so opposed to the European Union. 'That’s easy,' he replied. 'When I go into Downing Street they do what I say; when I go to Brussels they take no notice.'

True, but he's a much better bet than Clinton...She's a female version of Tony Blair.

It's amazing that someone that claims to be a Socialist can gather so much support in the US. The young people in the developed world are fed up with having their prospects ruined, it's a small step in the right direction...

It's not as bad as people report it to be. France will be fine, and the people there are happy, can afford to buy their homes, if they're unemployed they're not given a pittance to live off and the weather/food/booze/women are amongst the finest in the world

I'm already planning on having a family there when the time comes.

France is an excellent place to live if you are financially secure. Unfortunately it is being run by a clueless government who have no idea how to reduce their very high level of unemployment or national debt. The french health service is the best in the world but unless they tackle their ballooning debts many benefits currently being taken for granted will only become worse.

It would take a stronger politician than Sarko to sort out the mess, if only the iron lady was still about to help out!!

I don't live in France and there are poor places everywhere on earth including the most richest of all countries. However is this above statement really true? Maybe its the media being biased but i'm pretty sure i always see unrest within the ghettos of paris and other parts in France, especially those of immigration status.

You have no idea, France will be fine. If a Madame Thatcher ever got to power there we'd see a new revolution.

They suffered after the last financial crash, but the country is picking itself up. The UK is going to be battered by the next crash, clueless Gideon has been messing up the economy since he got his hands on it...

There are a few dodgy 'banlieues', but that's only because of a poorly planned housing project. We have the same in the UK (maybe with a bit less violence, the French do love to burn cars), they're just not part of the narrative of the right-wing press.

France needs a revolution to sweep away restrictive practices, increase the ridiculously short working week, cut business taxes and especially employment protection, which is why the unemployment is scandalously high. Alas they don't a politician with the intelligence or the will to modernise the country.

Without firm action it will further slide into the poo.

See, this is where you're clueless.

The French want those things. Most people should aspire to working less, having more job stability and want the people that can afford to to pay their fair share of taxes.

The rise of 0 hour contracts has given the Tories some fake unemployment stats to crow about, but both countries are in a very similar situation. London, due to the financial sector (the people that crashed economies all over the world due to their greed), is awash with cash but the rest of the UK isn't.

Their politicians are much smarter than the incompetent fools we've had in power since I've been alive.

Nobody in their right minds will invest in France with its unaffordable labour costs and high business taxation. The French politicians cannot be that smart as they have failed the economy, failed to reverse the high levels of unemployment and currently have the highest levels of political support for the far left and far right in any European country. A toxic mix.

I do agree however on the incompetent Brown Balls combo - utter fools.

    1. Lots of people invest in France, you do love a bit of hyperbole.
    2. They haven't failed the economy, there's been an international banking crisis. They haven't created a fake bubble through inflating the housing market.
    3. The French far right have very similar views to many Brexiters, and the polls show they're about 50% of the UK population. You keep on calling Corbyn far left, and Labour have a fair chunk of the population supporting them. I'd rethink that if I were you.

Thatcher and Major did more damage than New Labour, we're still suffering from it now and it's not looking like we're going to be able to fix it. When the housing bubble bursts this country will be in a right mess.

I'm not sure there is much hope for you, or the french people, with these strange views.

I much prefer facts and figures to views that are so general they could mean anything. The following are facts.

In 2015 the UK received more foreign investment than any other country in the EU. Germany was the second most successful and while France did get some it was a long way behind the other two. Quite a lot of the inward investment was in manufacturing, with parts of the country such as Yorkshire and the West Midlands gaining most from it. For the first time since 1998 there is a re-balancing of the economy underway. Most of the investment came from the US, France, Germany, Japan and China. Investment from other parts of the world fell back. The uncertainty caused by a UK EU Referendum is disruptive and is a risk to the UK’s inward investment performance as 31% of investors stated they would either reduce or freeze their planned investments up to 2017. Access to the European market is important for 72% of investors surveyed.

When I walk round Paris then walk round London, talk to normal multi generation French and normal multi generation English I thank my lucky stars that I'm English. Our problems are far fewer, disparities in society much less. Disagree if you want but go and ask immigrants in Paris and immigrants in London and compare...
