Is there anyone who actually thinks Donald Trump being next President of the USA is a good thing? Don't get me wrong, I'm not altogether enthralled about the prospect of Hilary in the Whitehouse either but even so...

Not me, cannot stand the man...it's quite funny watching King Alex of Scotland back-peddling in his love for him after years of sucking up to him to get golf courses built in Scotland.

Sometimes our beliefs coincide with those we don't usually agree with. You're on the same side as George Galloway <ok>

My sense is that the US is going through the same problem that the UK went through last century, that is, finding a new role after being the world leader. The 19th century was the British century, the twentieth the American, and the 21st will be the Chinese. When a country loses that sense of manifest destiny to another country there are problems in coming to terms with finding a new role and the obvious denial that that is what is required. I think the support for Trump is a symptom of this.

Nevertheless, I can't imagine that Trump will win most votes if he is the republican nomination because I think that many people will vote against him (rather than for the Democrat candidate) in addition to the votes for the Democrats. That doesn't mean that he will not become president, of course, because the American system is not based on the person with the highest number of votes getting elected.

If he is selected as Republican candidate it wouldn't surprise me if a more mainstream republican stands as an independent in the presidential race. Much will depend on how the Republican hierarchy view the long term.

The Republican hierarchy will not let a independent stand as that will let the Democrat in. If Clinton wins the Democrat ticket then Trump can win . If Clinton dose not get the ticket then Trump will find it a lot harder.

Can an independent run in the presidential race? Or is it only limited to 2 parties because of the cost involved, no other party could fund it? It's not something I have thought about before now.
For the previous 3 elections, we have been in the US on jolidays and it's a fascinating experience...will miss that this time

The fellow is some sort of horrific joke. Talk about getting the Politicians you deserve... now I dont usually say that as the poor and disempowered have so little influence... but the higher echelons of US society what must they be thinking... .the man is highly credible, divisive etc etc..... If the USA is the 'land of the free' , ' the greatest nation in the world' etc..... they are welcome to it.

He a bit like an evil Boris J <yikes>

The US has, until very recently, been" the home of the brave and the land of the free" - so long as you are White Anglo-Saxon and Protestant. After all it is only 50 years since racial segregation there was abolished!!! Yes we owe our freedom to them, but it sticks in the craw that it was primarily a business transaction for them and our debt has only just finished being repaid to them (in 2006).

The old adage of the US being a "Third-World country with money" comes to mind.

Mind, if the 21st century will be the Chinese then I fear for mankind.

Do we need an undisputed World leader ? Up to now it has always been normal that the World's most powerfull economic power strove also for an appropriate level of military and political power - does that always have to be the case ? China's growing dominance of World trade is evidenced by shipping flows - 15 years ago Rotterdam was the busiest port in the world, now it is on place 11 and all of the top 10 are now in Asia. The Chinese even administer the Panama Canal, meaning the Americans have to pay them to move sea freight from NY to Los Angeles. Will the Chinese want to translate this into military and political influence in the future ? Both Germany and Japan have been economic powerhouses but are well down the military rankings, and, until recently, lacked also in political influence. Is it not conceivable that we will see a division of powers in the future. I actually see one positive to the rise of Trump in the USA (and only one) if he gets into power there it may well help to move Britain closer to Europe.

Seeing as Parliament considered banning him from the UK I think the Brexiters' dream of advantageous trade deals is looking a bit far-fetched if he gets elected.

Hopefully Bernie Sanders will win it, proving that people are bored of constant abuse by right-wingers. I can't wait for Corbyn to be our next PM, every time I see Cameron's face I feel a bit sick...

How is that relevant? I've just moved back to London and I don't want a bunch of xenophobic Sun/Torygraph/Mail/etc readers ruining my job prospects or the economy of the country I was born in.

Thankfully you have left France, a country with very high unemployment and a clueless left wing government and arrived back to a country with low unemployment run an efficient Tory government.

No, my parents live in a field in France and there are no local IT jobs.

I moved back because I can easily get an IT job and my friends and family are here.

France is a great place to live if you are retired, the UK is a great place to run a business or find good employment although I would expect most of the french currently working here will return back to France with their fortune.

good luck with your job search.

I guess you are discussing with my ignored member Tobe .....

Interestingly the economy may seemingly be fu@@ed in la France... but the way of life, pace of life, approach to Family etc in rural France is reminiscent of post-war UK,,,, and interestingly many well-off Brits choose to have homes there...... bit of a paradox eh....

France is a great place to live full stop. There are plenty of jobs, just not in my area, it's as rural as you can get.

The Tories are slowly killing this country, Brexit will be the final nail in the coffin. At least they won't get re-elected for ages, people are slowly seeing them for what they are.
