A GLASS elevator could soon take tourists to the top of the Humber Bridge, new plans reveal.

The lift would take visitors to the top of the north tower, where a specially built platform would provide spectacular views across East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

It would be part of a major new tourist attraction, including a visitor centre and a new hotel, which would be built on part of the Humber Bridge Viewing Area car parks.

The Humber Bridge Board has outlined the proposals in a planning notice submitted to East Riding Council and intends to start work later this year.

Although the idea was first suggested in 2014, today's move is the first step towards it becoming a reality.

The plan – which would represent a significant investment by the bridge board – includes the construction of a glass elevator and viewing platform, allowing people to enjoy the views in a safe environment.

A full planning application is due to be submitted this spring, with work scheduled to start later in the year if the plans are given the go-ahead by the council.

Humber Bridge Board chairman Sean Chaytor said a new visitor attraction at the iconic landmark would expand the region's tourism offering and encourage people to stay for longer.

He said: “There has always been a huge interest from local people and visitors in going to the top of the Humber Bridge towers, and we understand that. It is an exciting prospect and affords the very best view of the estuary you can get outside of a plane or helicopter.

“So we decided to make it a reality. The project is in the final stages of design and we intend to submit a full planning application in spring.”

I seem to remember RH doing a program inviting people to call in with suggestions to improve tourist numbers visiting the area, and someone rang in with this idea. I wonder if that is where this came form?

Anyhow sounds a very good idea to me.

Unfortunately its not just near the Humber Bridge that this excrement is left around the place, I'm also seeing a lot of the stuff not even picked up by the dog owners and its back to the bad old ways of watch where you put your foot. A hefty fine for these wayward dog owners is needed but catching them is another matter as who is responsible council or police?

It is the ground works for the new bridge, I posted a picture of them on one of the other threads last week.

I can't this new idea being ready in 2017, they haven't even put in the planning application yet.

As it involves ERYC then it will probably go ahead some time in the near future and not be delayed for donkeys years. It is to hoped the East Riding residents don't have to queue too long because of the Hull folk coming to have a look.<laugh>

Pity there doesn't seem to be any chance of the bridge being lit up all the way along on the cabling as was once mentioned, I think Philips the electrical giant was mentioned as a possible partner in this scheme but have heard nothing for a long time.

I believe there's something going on regarding lighting it up during CoC2017.

I've been up and stood on the top of the North Tower. It is an incredible view. You can feel it moving about a fair bit though, but I loved it.

This looks a fantastic idea to me

Just for C.O.C OLM? That would be a shame but we can always hope it could be a long term thing once such a thing is visible.

My old man went to the top of the north tower when it was topped out and they'd just starting spinning the wires. It took him about three days to recover his composure!

Phil Brown should be invited to cut the ribbon for the elevator at the official opening.
