What do the clues mean? why are there 3 "mafia", 1 "thing" 8 other roles and so what i can see as only 12 roles? is that significant?

Last time it was heroes vs bad guys and turned it to an every man for himself situation. I'm not really sure what's going on now, looks like we need to lynch the thing and kill any of the bad characters to escape.
