JOSE ENRIQUE has been hit by a fine in the region of £100,000 and blasted by Toon owner Mike Ashley following his Twitter outburst.

The Spaniard – still in the squad for tonight’s game with Columbus Crew – was summoned to a heart-to-heart meeting with Alan Pardew at the team’s base in the city centre of Columbus. The manager told him he was not helping either the team or himself after his Twitter comments, in which Enrique criticised the club’s transfer policy.

The Journal understands Newcastle already have the wheels in motion for a new left-back – with England international Wayne Bridge, out of favour Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock and Alan Pardew’s former left-back at Reading Nicky Shorey all potential replacements. (FML)

None of the three match the Newcastle blueprint of “buy young and nurture” – but the left-back slot is a key area for the Magpies.

If Enrique goes, Shane Ferguson lacks experience. Pardew told The Journal last night: “Jose was wrong to put those comments up. I suggested that to him.

“It is a good offer which we have given him and maybe the frustration of the situation got the better of him.

“I want him to stay, he is a good lad but this did not reflect well on him. It was a mistake, he knows it and so do I.”

Newcastle will be meeting with all Premier League clubs at a communications conference to discuss the use of social media and how it should be used best.

Pardew also revealed he is concerned by the modern footballer’s use of Twitter and feels such networking tools need to be looked at.

He said: “I think Twitter is very dangerous. You can say things when emotionally when it is probably not the best time to try and express your feelings. That does not reflect well on people. A lot of players will be embarrassed by some of the stuff they put on there.

“I am not against free speech and am all for people expressing themselves.

“They just have to be very careful.”

Meanwhile, United take on Columbus Crew in their final US tour game tonight with Steve Harper set to start in goal at the Crew Stadium, but Ryan Taylor is ruled out of the clash against the MLS side.

Taylor hurt his groin on the plastic pitch in Orlando and misses out on the game.

Cheick Tiote is also a doubt for the friendly clash with a minor problem.

    Not surprised to be honest.

If this had happened at my work place I'd have been seriously reprimanded and perhaps have had my contract cancelled for bringing the business into disrepute.

Also, the maximum a club can fine a player under FA rules is two weeks salary so that would mean Jose is on £50k per week.

I'm sure we all thought he was on roughly £40k per week a while back and the rumoured amount on the contract offered is £60k per week.

100k does seem a bit steep to be honest. Can't quite remember the extent of other recent twitter related fines though so nothing to really base it off...

We all knew it was going to happen. Silly Jose. Says he misses twitter then goes and does something silly. This isn't gonna make him want to stay more now is it...

Good thinking and if the fantastic offer Pardew was talking about is indeed 60k a week... well that doesn't exactly sound like a fantastic offer. Let's face it , in order to keep top players you're going to have to give out a little bit more.

There's only Stephen Warnock out of them three I would be remotely interested in.

    Good on Ashley I say.
Like OT has stated it's not allowed in any other walk of life so these prima donna's should learn from their mistakes the hard way.
Not that 100k is that much to him though!

I've got a friend who's a Villa fan and he says that McLeish is quite keen on Warnock and has been using him a fair bit during pre-season, so we could probably rule him out. Not that any of them are favourable but I just thought that i'd eliminate at least one.

The 'offer' is already above the wage cap as far as I can recall so that shows the clubs intentions to Jose.

It's not about the money on offer as far as I can see. The refusal to sign stems from his ambition to play in the Champions League to try and secure a berth in the Spanish national team.

On that basis; Jose is right to stall and see what offers are available to him because in all honesty, Newcastle cannot offer that to him for the foreseeable future.

I still think that if he's available on a free then a Champions League club will snap him up so he will run down his contract.

I don't know where you gus work, but if I said to a bunch of my mates that my office was pursuing a bad policy which would prevent the business ever being betteer than satisfactory, that would be no business of my boss and certainly no basis for disciplinary action

This isn't just between mates though.

It's on a social networking site that is available to billions of people.

Sadly , that seems to be the issue.

At the end of the day , Jose's been a good servant for the club and stuck by us through thick and thin. He deserves to play at a higher level.

I only wish it would be with us :emoticon-0101-sadsm

    Are you daft?

As OT has already pointed out, there's nothing here about this being between a bunch of his mates. He said it publicly on Twitter and it spread across the media to millions of people.

Try working for a company and then saying bad things about them on hundreds of popular press websites. See what happens then.

In Jose's tweets he actually stated that his new contract offer was exactly the same wage he currently has.

Well, if has been fined two weeks wages at £100,000, that means he is on £50,000 a week - which is our wage cap. So he shouldnt expect to be offered any higher than that.

Be interesting to see the extent of Jose's ambitions if for arguements sake Bayern offered him £40k p/w and CL football, and we'd offered him £60k p/w would he go and play the CL football he craves for less money?

No doubt Jose Enrique can easily afford the fine, but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth hearing about somebody being fined for speaking what is a pretty obvious truth. I wouldn't expect anything less from lifelong bullies like Ashley and Llambias though.

There is an undercurrent of discontent at Newcastle that wasn't present last season and it doesn't bode very well.

I think he probably knew he'd get fined to be fair but he wanted to make his point. Bit of a storm in a teacup for me. I think he was fully entitled to comment on the "fantastic" offer made by the club. This led us to believe he was being offered a bumper contract, increasing his wages in a desperate attempt to keep him at the club. As it turns out, we're doing nothing of the sort. They decided to use the media as a medium to portray a certain view of the scenario, he has done likewise. No problem there for me as he is not cribbing about the offer made, only that the club is misleading people to believe he is being greedy. Certainly some fans have seen it that way.

The problem comes with his comments about the clubs transfer policy. You have to be careful in this regard. It's not really his place to say. He has let his frustration get the better of him. He has been fined and that is right, and although two weeks wages seems harsh, it is a drop in the ocean to these guys. He is frustrated because he saw a great nucleus which we needed to add to. Unfortunately that is not the way the club operates at present, and all transfer funds need to be generated from sales. He is footballer, not an economist. He doesn't give a damn if the club is in debt. He sees a fat billionnaire with money to burn unwilling to splash the cash on a club he's bought that Jose loves. He sees 40m in transfers fees arrive for Nolan/Carroll (plus wages), and he thinks that will be the money spent because they said it would. He's heard promise after promise in his time here and has clearly grown tired of it. It hurts him because he genuinely cares about the club and the fans.

The club just keep shooting themselves in the foot for me. They just seem against telling the truth. With regards to the 35m etc, why not just front up at the start and say a small proportion will be spent on players, and the rest will go on infrastructure and debt reduction. Nobody is gonna jump for joy, but it's a hell of a lot more palatable than being told one thing and finding another. Same with Enrique. Rather than saying we've made a fantastic offer leading everyone to believe an increase in wages etc, just say we've offered him a 5 year contract on the terms he already has, and that is far as we can stretch. Again you'll get grumbles, but you avoid all this farce.
