So with tonight's score, I'm feelling a little better about our result, though not sure if it is the loss that cheers me up or the prospect of Man U slipping down the league in weeks to come, with us inevitably taking the 5 the spot and both they a Liverpool battling it out for a Europa league qualifying spot!

Hope they go on and win it, preferably beating Spuds and the Scousers along the way!

You've got to admit, they are quite a team. We were in pretty good form at the start of this season and they bested us. At 0-1 I didn't think they could do it, but 2-1 says they have a confidence and spirit about them.

They are a good team, however we weren't actually in good form at all when we played them away really. We were fairly poor against them at home and had drawn with Newcastle and lost to Everton about that time. We weren't playing well really.

As for the thread topic, no I'm not feeling any better - I wanted us to be in this competition!!

No, I don't feel any better myself either. I'd like to think we lost to the eventual winners, as the old feeling goes though.
As to form, I didn't check. All I can remember is 6-0 against MKDs etc...

I cannot recall Saints playing Sevilla!! The EL trophy might as well take up permanent residence there should they win it again. Great performance from La Liga teams including Valencia, which really surprised me considering how poor they have been. Villareal v Napoli should be an interesting second leg and I think Villareal will survive the daunting task. And of course Athletic.

I feel better now...1) because we didn't lose to an apparently crap team and 2) because it's United (though they still have another leg remember).

I must say I feel sorry for the fans who paid £71 for that.

    For supporting their team?

Seeing as it was an allocation of around 800 then if I was to hazard a guess then it's not the plastics from Surrey who managed to get tickets for this game <ok>

I think there was almost a month between the loss to Midjyiland and 0-6 romp at the Dons.

Most, I expect. The "you don't come from Manchester" thing is a bit of a myth.

When they did a survey many years ago Manchester had more local fans (as a %) at a match than Southampton. I think this is because people are drawn from outside the city as we are the biggest club in the South. I think United have lots of people claiming to be fans from round the world, but these aren't the people attending matches (especially on a cold Thursday night).

Greater Manchester area/Cheshire and Lancashire I would call local, same as people attending Saints matches who come from North Hampshire and South Wiltshire and the Portsmouth and Bournemouth areas. However, United get 75,000, City 54,000 so both those clubs must attract fans from further afield such as Yorkshire, the Midlands, and Ireland.

The population of greater Manchester is just under 3 million. It's one of the largest urban conurbations in Europe.
