Couldn't agree more. And the security of any other iPhone in the world is no more at risk than it would be at any other time. Apple would only be handing over datafiles, not methods to breach security.
It's not hyperbole. If the FBI wanted backdoor access to a single device then they could have it. They've long used zero-day exploits (not admissable in court) to 'gather intelligence'. Exploits that they keep from the manufacturers of such products as they know that the security breach would be fixed. This is not about one device. It's about creating a legal precedent that will be exploited by governments in the future. The FBI's PR team are trying to paint Apple as 'terrorist sympathisers' to win over the opinions of those less informed.

Where are the facts behind this claim? The FBI appears to be asking for access to one phone and Apple are refusing it, so I can't see any truth in this statement unless I've misunderstood your meaning. And, while I'm not an advocate of untrammelled surveillance, I don't see a precedent of "we can check the phone of a terrorist (not a suspect, a terrorist)" as being the thin end of a wedge I'm not happy with. I said I'd give an update on that LENR [Low Energy Nuclear Fusion] 1MW device being tested for a year. It's called an E-CAT [Energy Catalyser] and is an industrialised unit, with scaled up production versions capable of powering factories, offices etc...The test has ended and, from what I can gather, it went very well indeed, with the ECAT performing with few problems. Whilst the test was carried out an independent assessor monitored the device to make sure all was above board, bearing in mind that the successful adoption of this technology could mean an eventual collapse of the current level of the world petroleum based economy. An ERV [expert responsibility for validation] report will follow in a month. Obviously this is hoped and expected to be favourable so that any last doubts can be dispelled that the technology is not pie-in-the-sky. I'll post news of the findings up when I see them. The basic ECAT is an LENR which produces excess heat in order to power a steam turbine. But for a long time a new LENR device has been developing. Called the ECAT-X, this is an industrial scale LENR which develops electricity directly. I have no idea how it achieves this, as I have only recently heard about it. It is thought that the first domestic electrical generators will come from the ECAT-X. The first ones should be just a little bigger than a current average sized boiler, but provide all the energy requirements needs of the home in power, heat and hot water, and be much, much cheaper to run. The only downside is that it means an electric hob! How would I cook Chinese food in my wok?

That's ok. I've read loads about this myself. Yes, I was a sceptic too, but there are several companies going down this or similar routes with millions being invested in them. IIRC, Bill Gates is investing in Black Light Power, for example. Brillouin Emergy have demonstrated their technology to the US Congress. People can be sceptical or not. From my perspective, considering the amount of personal influence one has over these things one might as well be open minded. Either these things will happen or they won't. In a month or so we may have a better idea.

Apart from the pure physics principles it breaks, there are other problems, such as the fact that the one of the main proponents of this, Andrea Rossi, has form in scamming people over new forms of energy (his previous work outlined in that link is illuminating). He won't let people test what's going on in his demonstrations (even down to not letting someone check whether there's a current flowing through the device's earth wire. Why on earth would someone refuse that - it's a simple test that wouldn't require giving away any knowledge yet would deny sceptics of one big area of doubt. Finally, it's not replicable. Science is based upon being able to replicate other people's work. This is not science. I heard Barry Marshall talking once. He's the guy who proved that stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria despite everyone not believing him for years. He swallowed bacteria to prove it. He says he's now inundated by people who write and say "I've got a theory and it must be true because no-one believes it, just like yours". Yep, I know. I once sat on the back of one of those sportsbikes and the pilot went gently. Never again. I got cramp. The other week I spent some time riding a small [400cc] Yamaha cruiser. It was rather nice. Being a Yamaha it was well put together, handled very well for a cruiser and was very comfy.
