Neil Redfearn suffered a torrid ending to his Leeds United career, ridiculed by club owner Massimo Cellino and essentially hounded out of Elland Road, his dismissal severed ties with a club where he was responsible for bringing through the youngsters currently playing in the first team. Speaking to Radio Yorkshire, Redfearn laid bare some of the things that fans were wanting to know surrounding not only his ‘departure’ from Elland Road but also events during his time there. Referring to Leeds United as “my club”, Redders is candid about some of the things going on at Elland Road. Opening up with a response as to whether he’d return to Leeds United under different circumstances and ownership, Redfearn began to expand on just how he thought that the Whites were on the edge of something special with the current crop of academy recruits and young players, this leading him to say that “we could have been right at the beggining of something really good.” This only served as a precursor to the bomb that he dropped saying that his dismissal from Leeds United, under the nefarious string-pulling of Massimo Cellino, actually cost the club dearly. When asked about transfer windows and transfer policies under Cellino, Redfearn was frank and honest about how these operated under Cellino’s stewardship. He said the recruitment side was taken “out of my hands” and went on to mention that he was consulted on potential players to bring in but the actual signings were done initially by peole like Nicola Salerno, Leeds United’s Sporting Director at the time. Speaking later on in the interview, Redfearn mentioned four player’s names that he gave to Andrew Umbers as players that should be brought in the following season, the 2014/15 campaign, in order to drive Leeds onwards to achieve a higher position in the table. On this, Neil Redfearn said, “I came up with a list, people like Joey Barton, Jason Shackell, Matty Phillips that was at QPR, all good players. Obviously Adam that Thommo [Steve Thompson] knew from Stoke…all players that were interested.” All of these players either remained at their clubs (Charlie Adams at Stoke, Matty Phillips at QPR) or moved on (Jason Shackell, Burnley to Derby County and Joey Barton (released by QPR and signed by Burnley), but the common factor was that none signed for Leeds United; in essence, the club had missed out on four “interested” players whose quality could have made a huge difference to the current Championship campaign.
I read this earlier today, while it does stink of sour grapes I do wish we had managed to get a couple of those targets.
So Barton was interested, was he, Redders? Joseph Barton @Joey7Barton Leeds is a huge club and of course if they had stability off the field, It could have been of interest last year. But with current issues away from the field, I couldn't afford to join a club and waste energy on nonsense. I'm interested in playing in midfield for Leeds, but it's never going to happen. As realistic a signing as Barton's was. What planet is Redders on?
