Yep. The old YWCA was a bit rough anyway. But to straightaway point to this place as a possible cause was pretty poor imho.
The Prinny Ave end of the Avenues has had loads of flats anyway with some pretty dodgy types in them without sticking it on a homeless place.

    Definitely students.
Apparently it's a turf war with The Yardies and The Triads for control of the illegal hair products, pimple cream and silly trousers markets.

There were some great people down there. But I left a long time ago and it has gone downhill since.

Unbelievable to look at Princes Avenue nowadays compared to then. One licensed place, the Italian restaurant, for a long time and absolutely nothing else on that side, a takeaway on the other side. Chaplins came along to make it comparatively vibrant. Neares pubs, Queens, Notanic and Polar .Bear all shut at 10.30pm and closed in an afternoon. Some people look on those as the good old days and would like to return to them.

Not me. I'm not saying the proliferation of bars doesn't have its associated problems, but it's a far more enjoyable and vibrant place to be these days. I don't think it's gone downhill at all, CC.

Prinny and Newland Ave's have improved massively, though I've no idea how it's changed if you live round there, it was certainly nice when I was a teenager.

The area was nice when I lived there. But like a ghost town down Princes Avenue after 6pm. So were most places in the 1970s early 1980s.

Bring back At Cost , and the cool little record shop in there !!!

I wouldnt chose to live around there any more (i spent 1992 - 97 on SB Nr Prinny Ave) but the Avenues and Newland does have a vibrancy about it , which is a good thing ... i think :D

I was referring to the fact it is a given that an area goes downhill if I leave it.

Good job Prinny Ave was dead when I lived there. Got in enough bother with the better half with the opening hours as they were then and having to walk to Queens or Botanic for a pint. You will probably find that hard to believe having seen the way I drink slowly and pace myself.<laugh>

There was a record shop down there in the 1970s which offered me over £100, a huge amount then, for my copy of Otis Blue, Otis Redding Sings Soul, a1965 mono copy which is far superior as they rerecorded a load of his stuff in stereo and ****ed them up. Still got it but have nothing to play it on now.
