Just heard on Talkshite a 'rumour' on the breakfast show this morning that someone has made an approach for Lucas. It's just one of those 'rumours', right? Just smoke, no fire....?

We wouldn't sell anyway, a good DM is priceless in modern football.

How times have changed! I remember when everyone wanted to drop Lucas from the team!! He's grown into a top player though. I'd even go so far as to say that the absence of Gerrard has helped him to develop.

He is far from being top player. There is no doubt that Lucas has improved considerably of the past few years and I'm very happy for the lad, especially with the abuse he had to put up with.

But we have to be realistic, he has only improved up to an average level, a level which he should have been at when he first arrived. He is an important member of the SQUAD. I think a lot of fans would still rather have a DM like Mascherano over Lucas any day of the week (talking in terms of footballing ability and not attitude as Lucas is a top professional).

There are still far too many times when Lucas is caught out and loses possession, which often occurs when we're playing 'lesser' teams who are in your face and do not give you much time or space. I'm hoping the arrival of Charlie Adam will help Lucas to soley focus on pressing the opposition and not worry AS much on retaining the ball.

In summary - good player but not as good as everyone makes him out to be.

I don't think he's world class or at the highs of lets say Makalele or Hamman in their prime but I also think he will be at that level one day. So I wouldnt swap him for anyone, he's the right age to continue improving and will be an important player for years.

His breaking up of the play and also his passing has improved greatly and I expect him to start most games for us.

Can't see it happening. He signed a new contract a couple of months ago so that says to me that Kenny sees him in his long-term plans.

Agree - I have high hopes for the lad and I'm confident he can develop further. If you look at the recent friendlies where Lucas was missing and you can see how vulnerable the defence is.

Ridiculous rumour. There is a reason Kenny played him in every single match since he came in, and it's not because he thinks he's rubbish.

I don't know why everyone is hating on Lucas, I suppose since people actually all agreed he's a good player they decided to stop watching him play. A player as good as Lucas is a position hard to find.

In the premier league, Tiote and Lucas are the best DMs and Tiote makes far too many dirty fouls, so I'd go as far to say Lucas is the best DM in the league. In a physical league, where the pace is extremely fast, he is an invaluable player.

need to get rid of some players but lucas is an important part of the team. I dont think KK will follow in the footsteps of Rafa.
This rumour was originally made by the s*n!!! so i dodn't expect much there to be much truth in it, unless there tapping his phone of course.

    Rumours eh?
I'm expecting Lucas to leave now- just like I'm expecting the 327 players we've been rumoured to be buying to start turning up any day now.

I'd definitely take Essien, and possibly Song ahead of him, and maybe Carrick.

Sorry, I did forget about him. Although, he can be very unprofessional at times (see World cup) he can be a good DM.

You're joking right? Essien, Song and Carrick ahead of Lucas?

You are aware Lucas got the most tackles in the premier league last season, which is pretty much the job of a DM.

No, it isn't - not any more. The role has progressed so, so much since Makelele's tackle-and-pass routine. There's infinitely more to it nowadays.

No, I think you're thinking more of the Holding midfielder whose job it is to tackle and pass. Defensive midfielder is much more.... defensively minded.

Lucas has proved that he is one of the best (if not the best) DM in the premier league. His stats over the whole of last season clearly back this up.

I don't think Kenny would be stupid enough to get rid of Lucas. Not a hope in hell of that happening.Lucas is needed for certain games against teams with no central midfield due to his ability to harass and annoy and badger. He can do all this by not actually moving,it allows other players to do damage further up the pitch.
