Petrol for me TSS, don't like the smell of diesels, especially the ones running around on veg oil.

Apparently FIFA are investigating the use of 3G pitches. Some evidence linking it with lymphoma...especially in goalkeepers who breath it in and swallow it when diving. Definitely needs investigating with so many youngsters playing on artificial pitches.

I like the advise he gives, choose quieter streets for your commute - if we all did that, no streets would be quiet

I didn't realise there was so much loose material in 3G pitches and that it is made of old tyres...can't be good to breath that in.

I was going to mention about petrol vehicles. If people remember, there was the scare of petrol vehicles because of the lead additive to stop pre-ignition [knocking or pinking as it's known]. So they redesigned petrol engines so that the exhaust valve remained cool enough in operation. The vast majority of petrol engines were already upto spec, so it wasn't a big deal. The most popular fuel quickly shifted from 4 star to 2 star [or **** to **]. Margaret Thatcher was advised to argue for lean-burn engines, whereas other experts argued for catalytic converters. In the end we got both. Petrol engines still pollute, but nothing like as much as they did, and their cocktail is less harmful. Diesels have polluted just as much as petrol engines, only their output is absolutely deadly, even today. Arguably, far worse than petrol engines were even when they had lead in the petrol and no lean-burn or converter technology.

Just to show that tests can be misleading though, when I first had to put my bike through an emission test [it was a Dutch import - how topical] in 2009, the VOSA tester told me he had to check his equipment because the exhaust air coming out the back was cleaner than the surrounding air, and he didn't believe the result. Sounds impressive? Well not really. My bike was pumping out CO2 like it was going out of fashion. Very clean CO2, but the undesirable stuff no less. and that was under strict test conditions. Every time a throttle is opened/accelerator pushed, the engine pumps out vastly more pollution than any steady state test is going to record. So it's the push-bikers who are really innocent here. Shame there are some mad ones to focus on.

Some carpet underlays are made from bits of old tyre and other synthetic rubbery things.

Yes, I particularly liked that bit. Quieter streets - colloquially called rat runs. I use them as much as possible.

It made me chuckle when the owner said it took 5 people to move it a few inches... and then 3 blokes from the council turned up and put it back.

There's an odd part of me that would have loved to have happened upon that just for the thrill. :)

There's an odd part of me that would have had the idea and then been first over the fence to put it in the street after a few beers - I love seeing little pranks like this that are mostly harmless. IOW natives don't do much more than 8mph on their mobility scooters so should have been able to avoid it :emoticon-0102-bigsm

That's it! I'm sure of it.

I've been following the advice of the NHS: fifteen-minute warm soaks in soapy water, four times a day.

Also applying anti-bacterial cream to it before I go to sleep.

Will give it a couple of days but have been told that if a large yellow area appears under my nail and starts to spread towards the centre of the nail, I have to go to the doctor ASAP to get it opened up.

At the moment we're not at that point, so I'll keep soaping, soaking and applying anti-bacterial cream.

    Thanks guys.

Good stuff. Please don't come on here describing all future infections though DTLW. Some are best left between a man and his physician.

At the risk of being told off again for proffering medical advice - it's spectacularly unlikely, but if the redness begins to spread up the finger toward the hand then go get it checked out asap as well.
