Someone mentioned Ronnie Hilton but he was, I believe, from Leeds, but Wilberforce ,Marvell and Bishop Alcock were all "old Grammarians".
A former botanical garden site on Anlaby Rd is commemorated with a street named after Carl. If he visited he could find apt names for some of the pond life now dumped there that spoil it for the majority who are decent folk.
Patrick Stewart Star Trek Captain Maureen Lipman Actor/comedian John Alderton Please Sir old man had a off license down Hessle Road used to give update on ground conditions during Winter Jimmy Binks best wicketkeeper to never play for England Tom Courteney Dr Zhivago,The dresser,Lonliness of the long distance Runner, when on This is Your Life whole City team at the time were on,his dog was called Waggy. Andrew Marvell MP and Poet Ian Carmichael actor Bertie Wooster and the top of them all but cant remember her name but she played Minnie Caldwell in Coronation Street.
Minnie Caldwell was played by Hull born actress Margot Bryant. The daughter of a doctor, on completing her education Bryant moved to London with her family. There, she became interested in the theatre, and appeared in the chorus lines of various productions before moving on to musical comedies. She also appeared in a number of films, such as Stop Flirting with Fred Astaire, Cure for Love, and Beat Girl with Oliver Reed in 1960. She also appeared in a West End role, as Lucy in Gay's the Word at the Old Saville. Bryant also toured in My Mother Said and later appeared in the show's television production. She also appeared in The Bell Family and in the movies I Get Myself Arrested and The Large Rope. She died in 1988 aged 90 after spending her remaining years in Cheadle mental hospital in Stockport after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She never married. Also Brian Rix (now Lord Rix I believe) was born in Hull. John Prescott was born in Prestatyn in Wales not Hull. John Godber was born just outside of Pontefract not Hull. Arthur lucan (Old Mother Riley) was born in Lincoln but died in Hull in the wings of Tivoli stage (now Skeltons Cafe). There is a plaque there.
Febbos. I have only been to Hull for 10 days but my top stars would be. J Arthur Rank - Founder of the Rank Organisation( Cinema) Dorothy Mackaill- Hull's greatest Female film star( Played opposite Clark Gable) David Whitfield - Already mentioned but was Hull's first pop star and with his record " Cara Mia" became the first UK singer to top the US record hit parade and it was a Gold Record. Not widely known was that in his early career he performed in the Hull clubs singing without a microphone(no need) and my husband,s dad used to accompany him on the piano. Some real stars for you!!
Gordon White (lord White of hull) One half of the global industrial Hansen White group. Ex pupil of Southcoates School.
He wasnt just born there, he didnt come to Hull into well into his adult life. Im stunned that people actually thought Prescott was from Hull.
HMS Bounty from "Mutiny on the Bounty" fame was built at Blaydes shipyard in Hull. Ok not a person but the best I could do
He's been a Hull MP for over 40 years and many people on here haven't even been alive that long, I think they can be forgiven for assuming he was local.
Well I havent been alive that long and I knew. And I certainly forgive them, I was just very surprised. Back on point and surely only Wilberforce would qualify as being genuinley 'world known', which the recent film Amazing Grace would only have helped. Isnt Andrew Lincoln from Cott? He's recently made some in-roads into big budget US telly although he always weirdly plays a Manc.
Paul Heaton (aka front man of the Housemartins) was born in Birkenhead, hew only moved to Hull as a 21 in 1983 when he got off a ferry after a trip around Europe - he stuck around and ended up owning most of the houses down Grafton Street. He moved away about 10-12 years ago and now lives in West Didsbury, Manchester. He is a fan of Sheffield United having lived there as a kid. He met Norman Cook at college in Surrey and asked Norman to do him a favour and play bass in his band because they could not find a decent bass player (Norman Cook incidentally hated Hull and only there when he had to be).
Sebastian Horsley - Very well known artist/dandy. He did a lot of his art with Sarah Lucas who was friends with the likes of Hirst and Emin. Think Russell Brand just more mental. Died from an overdose. Mentions Hull on a few of his YouTube videos and he was born on the Holderness. Not from Hull at all but worthy of a mention. 90's American indie band Pavement and fans of City and Stephen Malkmus claims in this interview (http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=125&p=8433&more=1&c=1) that it's "Hull City or die". Most famous for 'Cut Your Hair'
