Leeds United started legal action against the Football League to attempt to dismantle the collective selling of TV rights and win the right to sell their own games, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

The extraordinary and unprecedented move has sent shockwaves across the 72 League clubs who play below Premier League level. The move could destroy a main income stream, the £100million a year they collectively earn from Sky Sports.

Although Leeds's highly controversial owner Massimo Cellino has put a temporary stay on the process, the Mail on Sunday can reveal Leeds's Championship match at home to Middlesbrough on Monday is only going ahead after the Football League was forced to take out a legal injunction against Leeds to make them honour the fixture.

It is believed to be the first case ever, certainly in the English game, where any governing league has had to legally force a club to play a fixture, and sources say rival clubs are aghast at Leeds' behaviour.

All 72 clubs were represented at a private meeting staged in Milton Keynes on Thursday, when the League's chief executive, Shaun Harvey, briefed them on what had hitherto been a completely secret legal dispute with Leeds and Cellino.

The clubs were told Leeds launched their initial legal to torpedo the collective selling agreement last Autumn.

Sources say executives were stunned as Harvey explained that such a challenge might theoretically destroy the league's current five-year broadcasting deal with Sky, currently in its first year.

There would be no guarantee of a Cellino legal victory, but no guarantee either he would fail either. Leeds are arguably the 'biggest' club, in multiple ways, currently outside the Premier League. If they won the right to do their own TV deals, then they would expect to hugely increase the share of TV money they receive each season from around £2m to perhaps tens of millions. Other 'bigger' clubs might follow suit and the majority would be left facing a financial deficit.

Those with knowledge of Thursday's meeting say executives from rival Championship clubs vented their fury at the Leeds representatives at the meeting - the new executive director, Paul Bell, in his first weeks in his new job, and a Leeds lawyer. Cellino was not present. Sources say Bell launched a passionate defence of Leeds's position, saying they had games moved for live TV unfairly often. Leeds's position has attracted some sympathy - albeit limited - among other clubs.

this was covered by Eire earlier..... Cellino just trying to divert attention from what happened last week exactly as I said he would in a post on Thursday. Perhaps he gets his approach from a book called owning clubs for dummies....

All too predictable. He has already lost this argument, and they will call his bluff. Can have whatever tv deal he wants but nit whilst we are in the fl or FA.

Do people really believe everything they read in the papers these days? Odd, isn't it, that the rag relied on 'sources' and 'those with knowledge of the meeting'. Hasn't it occurred to you that if this was true, there would be a scrum of Chairmen bleating openly to the press. They never miss an opportunity if they think their pockets will be threatened. Not one quote was had. Not one.

This is just another attack on our club by the press & I'm disappointed that people believe it. I fully expect more legal action to be taken here - and we'll win!

Yeah cos Cellino wins a lot of legal arguments. If stopped pissing people off anh having legal fights he might have enough money spare to give us a decent team... If ur going to post ****e can I come round and push in your keyboard and thus stop you posting again....

I couldn't give a **** if they made it up if it helps get rid of him then. <applause><applause><applause>

Look what I found on the OS - the other side of the story. In this case, the truth.

Paul Bell, Executive Director of Leeds United, comments on stories that have appeared in the press over the weekend.

Last Thursday I attended a meeting organised by the Football League on behalf of all its member clubs.

The meeting was organised, like all previous Football League club meetings, so that clubs could discuss matters together, privately and confidentially.

It is therefore disappointing to read inaccurate press reports this morning quoting 'sources' from within the meeting.

Given the nature of the article, I feel that it is important and necessary to set the record straight.

I would like to make it clear that Leeds United is not seeking, nor has it taken legal action, to dismantle the collective selling of TV rights as has been suggested.

This model has proven extremely successful for some of the biggest leagues around the world, none more so than the Premier League.

The revenues received by all clubs from the sale of their domestic broadcast rights and overseas broadcast rights are vital to the long-term health and survival of clubs.

The club has, however, made it clear to both Sky and the League that it opposes the degree of control exercised by Sky over the league fixture list, and seeks transparency as to how these rights have been sold.

During the meeting, I outlined our position to all the other chief executives and senior personnel present, helping to provide everyone with a clear understanding of the issues that we are raising, issues that affect all of the league clubs.

Today's article seeks to position Leeds United as a lone, isolated voice. However, this is far from the truth and there is a growing number of clubs who now understand and share our desire for transparency.

It is our duty to protect the long term interests of the club and our passionate supporters. Therefore, we will continue to pursue these issues with the Football League.

We will endeavour to share what information we can, at the appropriate stages, through the club's official website.

It was reported in those papers you say are stitching us up two hours before it went on the O/S.
Only problem is there is a paper trail that proves the mail story, and Cellino is trying to back away from it... If not he would be starting a legal fight he might win.

Paper trail, is there? Where is it then?

What's with the 2 hours thing? Didn't the club respond quickly enough for you? What is the alternative you expect? The club to be clairvoyant?

Not one single quote, with 71 other club Chairmen attending the meeting. Just the same as when they voted against us a few years ago when we got points deducted. Absolute silence from them then as well. Oh, wait a minute! <doh>

WJ. Don't understand this post, I'm not the brightest. Are you saying that the meeting never happened, it did an the other chairman are stitching us up?
Also, why do you fundamentally believe in Cellino so strongly? I'd like to have this much faith

Yes, the meeting happened. But IMO the Mail story is a fabrication, or at best, a twisted view of what happened. When meetings like this have taken place before, the Chairmen have always been happy to slate us in the press. Think back to when we got the points deduction. They were all rentagobs declaring that we deserved it etc.
Not one person has been quoted in the article. It's nonsense IMO, and I'm always going to back a statement put out by the club on the OS against a hate piece in a rag that's never written a complimentary story about us.

Of course there is a paper trail, you can't get injunctions without paperwork, or are you suggesting the injunction taken out two months ago never happened. Plus the fl meeting will be minuted....

If the King of litigation sues (and from previous history he would if he had a 1% chance if winnng) then the whole lot will be submitted as evidence. Whilst there is the threat of legal action from either side the paperwork will be embargoed and remain secret. If he spent as much on LUFC as he did suing people we might have a decent squad and coach.

    Well done Jock,

I also read this on another link on another post I think, makes the paper look small and humiliated.

This is what I meant earlier about media making things up just to get a story and sell, they don't give a damn about leeds united.

A growing number of clubs are also looking for transparency, Harvey may well be scared.
