The Independent newspaper is to cease printing next month despite making £5 profit last year and being the paper with the fastest increase in readers. Don't think that includes the red tops. They are still going to produce a web version, with the owners saying this is the way that the industry will go in the future. Will we see the demise of more printed newspapers in the next few years, or will there still be a place for them?

That's a real shame as the only one that I buy is The Independent on a Saturday

Are there still printed newspapers about? I do see newsagents and supermarkets with printed rags on display, but I assumed that they were on the level of Closer, Heat, Woman's Own etc. (all of which I avidly devour of course) and not for consumption by anyone with a modicum of intelligence. Is the Telegraph still going now that disgruntled of Tunbridge Wells (apparently in Surrey according to one Labour MP) has died? Does anyone actually know the whereabouts of the Manchester Guardian?

Does anyone on here know the whereabouts of Manchester? - we seem to have sold less that 2000 tickets so far for the United game.

This site seems to be having problems. No server I was told for a couple of hours, then when trying to post it kept losing a connection again. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

I guess it is to do with the scheduling. Shame for those who wanted to bring the kids - and for anyone else obviously.

Me too. Bought it when it first came out too. Can't say I've helped to delay it's demise though...

Morning all, very windy with squally showers in this part of the world. I bought some more varnish over a week ago to apply to my new shutters, but there has not been a single day since when I could make a start on the job. Yesterday when we went to get our shopping we found that many fields were underwater where the rivers had burst their banks. Looks as if it will be a cold afternoon for those following the team, so if you intend to go wrap up well and safe journey.

    Morning all

Sodden here yet again...Eastleigh postponed for the second waterlogged week running.

On the subject of newspapers, a friend who has worked for the Guardian for more than 20 years says most of their investment is now going into their online version. Sounds as though they too will be going paperless at some point.

It's wet and windy here as it has been all week. Anyone else remember the short-lived newspaper Today? I may have lost a potential Pub Quiz thread question, but I think the only reference to it in any TV programme is in the Red Dwarf episode "Backwards" where it is called either Yesterday or Tomorrow (I haven't seen the episode in a while) but the blue top was definitely a reference to it.

As a student about 10 years ago I used to pay 25p for a weekday copy of the Guardian, and it's now around the £2 mark. How they can justify that when all the content is available for free online and most people have access to it via smartphones/tablets baffles me...They're about to put a paywall up on their site, charging £5 per month, which is a bit of a leap of faith as they will lose a lot of readers, but I guess they have to pay their staff somehow.

Mick the site owner is notoriously lazy, and the site is experiencing database issues...

He won't let anyone look at it either to try and sort it out, so here's hoping he finally gets round to it...
