Fleg protest to come to Scotland?

A Scottish council could fly the Irish tricolour over a number of its buildings on the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

A request was made to North Lanarkshire Council to fly the flag of Ireland to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the event.

The application from Irish cultural organisation Cairde Na hEireann to have the flag flown at three locations in Motherwell, Coatbridge and Cumbernauld was supported by the council's corporate services committee.

As the decision goes against current policy, the issue will be discussed at a meeting of the local authority. It is understood the move has been opposed by a number of councillors who are bidding to have it scrapped.

The committee has backed the move for the tricolour to be flown above a number of civic buildings across North Lanarkshire on April 24, however.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: "We received a request to fly the national flag of Ireland to commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising.

"The corporate services committee decided to support this application. However, because this decision would represent a departure from current council policy the matter will have to be considered at a future meeting of the council."

The council’s policy is based on Scottish Government and Scotland Office guidelines. It was decided in 1996 to also fly the North Lanarkshire Council flag at half mast in the event of the death of a serving elected member and to fly the local authority flag on each occasion on which the full council meets.

The Easter Uprising was an event of huge significance in the history of Ireland. A total of 15 leaders of the uprising were executed.

It's news ... and worthy of a thread. Most jocks won't want it . And given there's a lot of jocks and irish on here, then it's will get a bit of an arguing going on.

My dad's cousin is scottish, not too sure about the genealogy but I think it's my great-aunt that married a jock.

Am too cool and handsome to be scottish I have all my teeth too

You do wonder if people in Councils sit there thinking "what can we do to wind everyone up?". Will be intersting if it happens in England - day after St Georges and all that.....

Councillors need to justify their existence, hence why they even debate ****e like this.

 

Paddies day people get their flags out and Guinness hats on I don't think anyone is offended.
Many Hotels etc in England have all the British flags Eng Ire N I and Wales fluttering in the wind all year round it looks nice.
Cool kids and students have the jolly roger.
The only ones we are touchy about are Isis and Swastika.

Edit that may be a Euro 2016 thing.

 

I don't know what happened in Easter 1916 but it was probz bad.
