Right. Just a thought what with all these suns giving off enough heat to give us sunburn why isnt the universe as hot as the tropics? Must be the cheese.......,

Variable wavelength and speed of light along its interstellar journey is offered by some as a likely explanation of why the universe appears to be expanding. It's literally an optical illusion, for which some pseudo-scientists erroneously introduce the daft idea of Dark Matter and Dark Energy to explain.

As you two seem to have a good knowledge of these things, I'll try to word something I've wondered about. I hope you get the jist of what I mean .

Does an infinite universe have to contain all possible alternatives?

For example, does an infinite universe have to have a star at every direction I look, or is there an option for some bits of infinity to be blank?

I've seen programmes where the multi-verse and parallel universe's are discussed, and they claim there'll be a universe for each decision made, but I wonder if being infinite has to mean every outcome has to exist?

Don't bother. Quantum Physics has (almost) nowt to do with the topic under discussion (whatever that may be!).

For those in the UK with access to BBC4 - a very good documentary (Brian Cox presenting) in the "Horizon" Series. ("Can we make a star on Earth").
First aired 08-09, was on at 9pm GMT tonight & will be on again 40 mins after midnight tonight (Beeb4).
Some searching questions asked, some tough technological problems to be resolved, but imo a very worthwhile reason (one part of human survival strategy in the short term) for investing in funding for the theoretical, to "real" to tech application chain of endeavor.
I'm sure some of you would be interested in the program.

Excellent..that didn't take long. I wasn't planning on discussing the Cancer Charity issue , however please remain open minded.
I try only to deal in demonstrable facts , but there are times when I rely on memory.

In the most recent set of published accounts for CRUK 39 people earned over £100,000 in salary , 1 earned between £240,000 and £250,000. Obviously 38 people earned somewhere in between the £100k and £250k figures. My point being is , is it in the interests of these 39 people to find a cure and lose their income
(albeit I'm sure they are resourceful people and will find other gainful employment) or is it in their interests to perpetuate the 'Together we'll beat it' (but we need a bit more money) mantra ...after all they've only had 110 years (ish) at it. I just want them to be honest and say we are just researching to develop drugs which won't cure but will help suffers extend their life slightly in less pain.
Trouble is the treatments available today are much the same as they were 30 years ago , Surgery (Cutting) Chemo (poisioning the whole body) , Radiation (burning)
hardly huge strides forward is it ? . Yes I know there are other therapies (proton beam , immunotherapy) but these are not usually available on the NHS due to the inappropriately named 'NICE'

Never mind quantum physics, I struggle with energy moving down a copper wire making a light shine. That same energy working to make it seem like an orchestra is around me in my living room, just from some tiny headphones is like voodoo. Doing that wireless has to be the devils work, as is a pip and water turning into an apple tree.

I end up walking around bewildered if I'm made to think about things.

That's a very puzzling statement. You are suggesting you are unsure of the topic under discussion, yet glibly state has nothing to do with Quantum Physics.
Bit of a quantum leap is it not ?

so, anyway, why don't electrons slow down? they somehow have enough energy to whizz about for zillions of years. how does that work?

they're on the little side, if i recall my trying to learn days. they also have a habit of being somewhere else. when i was of school age, they tried to teach us this utter crap about stuff called orbitals and i hated it so much i gave up chemistry. then it turned out it wasn't even true. i could have been a great chemist if they hadn't cheated me off the course. the word chemist is derived from the french word for shirt, because famous early french chemists got quite shirty if asked awkward questions, and they always dribbled interesting chemical things onto their shirts by mistake. or so i read somewhere.
