Just started wondering about this.. maybe some of the veterans will know.. could you always buy a replica shirt from the club, was there always a shop? or was shirt buying sth which started in the 60s?
The first registered kit design, specifically done to sell to fans, was Leeds in 1973 and was made by Admiral.
I bought my first City shirt about 75/76 time. It was the broad black and amber stripe one as worn by the Bremner team. I had to order and pay for it at Arco. There were not too many of them seen about even at matches.
So if you dig deep enough all the commercialism that's crept into and is ruining the modern game was started by Leeds?
I did indeed, I nearly made up another club, in the hope that no-one else knew the real answer, but holding TWS responsible for all that's bad in modern day football has made me feel much better.
In the champions of europe rebranding, just after the introduction of colour telly. The all white cotton shirt with a picture of a cross eyed bird for a badge was replaced with a nylon shirt with a yellow LUfc symbol, blue and yellow trim was also added. The shirt makers logo became part of the pattern and they also introduced numbered tie ups for the socks. It made them look like coonts.
Does anybody know where you can buy them from still? been trying to get my hands on an 80/82 shirt for a while now.
