Heurelho Gomes will start the new football season as Tottenham's first-choice goalkeeper.

Gomes has been the No1 at White Hart Lane since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven for £7.8million in 2008 but was strongly linked with a move away from the club after a number of high-profile mistakes in the second half of last season.

Standard Sport revealed last May that manager Harry Redknapp wanted to keep the Brazil international at White Hart Lane but the signing of Brad Friedel from Aston Villa on a free transfer last month increased speculation that Gomes's place was under threat.

Friedel insisted he was looking to play regularly for the first team and both keepers have been watched closely in pre-season training so far, as well as Carlo Cudicini, who recently signed a new contract.

All three played on Spurs' tour to South Africa but it was Gomes who impressed most with his display in the 3-0 victory over Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

It is understood Redknapp is keen to stand by the 30-year-old and plans to start him in their first Premier League game, at home against Everton on August 13.

Meanwhile, the club's hopes of agreeing a loan deal for Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor are over. Redknapp admitted last week he wanted to sign the former Arsenal striker but his £170,000-a-week salary was always a problem with Spurs' strict wage structure.

Now I've always backed Gomes but I felt it might have been a good time to part company with him this summer. Friedel has looked a bit shaky in pre-season but I think we could do with him giving us more stabillity at the back, he always organises the defence well at set pieces and whilst Gomes is an excellent shot stopper, we can't afford to concede goals from his erratic form and poor concentration.
    Any thoughts?

I like Gomes. He has great reactions and reach. He does make a few howlers but I think the brilliant saves outweigh them. He is not the best at concentration, commanding his area, or organising the defence, but surely he can be coached into improving these areas.

It's one of my hobby-horses but football managers and fans alike are too quick to want 'someone better' when the real solution is to get better performance out of who we've already got. That is what managers and coaches are for.

For whatever reason, the gutter press have decided that he is a calamity keeper, and gleefully report on the errors he makes in great detail. Yet they never do/did about Almunia or Fabianski, let alone Kirkland, Green or Carson - and as for Kuszczak's horror show against Blackburn at the end of last season, it's as if they were all looking the other way.

Gomes has been with us for 3 years and he is still has erratic as ever with set-pieces and his handling is barely Championship level. I agree that his performances in games like the two against AC Milan and his overall form the previous season are often overlooked by the fans. But this is a massive season coming up for us, if we miss out on the top 4 again we can kiss goodbye to Modric, VDV and Bale and with our defence so changeable the least we can do is put a 'keeper who may not be spectacular but is consistent behind them.

If Gomes is No1 then we bought the wrong keeper in Friedel.

Are you serious? Alumina gets destroyed everytime he makes a mistake. Even got the blame for a N'gog goal which was not easy to save. Fabianski is called Flappyhandski for a reason, he also got a lot of stick for his awful end to the 2010/11 season.

I've always been happy for Gomes to stay. He won't make those blunders again.

He will also make some world class saves to be fair. Still remember the guy stopping Van Persie from scoring a 15 minute Hat-trick with 3 world class saves.

If Gomes is staying and it appears that he is, then I'd still find it surprising to see him starting against Everton.
It might be more prudent to stick Friedel in and use the Brazilian for cup games, until we can be sure that he's recovered from last season's injuries and loss of form.

Long term, we need to bring in a younger keeper, even if he'd only get loaned straight back out again.
How long can Friedel and Cudicini have left at the top of their careers?
