You need to re-read your post.

I was discussing the point that YOU raised about firearm checks in France compared to the absence of similar checks in Belgium.

I was simply trying to expand the discussion on your comments. It is quite relevant to discuss the ease, or not, in moving firearms between countries. As other posters have stated, the Schengen area without borders obviously makes this easier.

So would you like to say why there is so much gun crime in the UK and where the guns come from?

2,000 in London and the West Midlands alone I would think is more than enough. I suppose it depends on what you compare it with.

USA and the rest of the Europe. I'd probably go as far to say the rest of the world (without checking)

No, I am however pleased that we are not part of the failed experiment called Schengen Agreement. Every country has gun crime but the last thing any responsible government would do is to have an open border without any checks. Common sense really.

    change of subject.

There was an interesting article in the Sunday Times regarding unemployment benefit in France. The maximum current entitlement is £5,082 per month with the requirement to 'sign in' on the internet each month to declare the recipient was still jobless. This entitlement could last up to two years. Anyone who has worked for four months can claim up to 75% of their salary.

Hollande is attempting to reduce this benefit amongst others to reduce costs. After recent strikes by teachers and taxi drivers, employment office workers are due to go on strike tomorrow over their working conditions.

When I lived in France my neighbour quite happily used this benefit for the two years before seriously looking for a job. No wonder France is in a financial mess.

France’s unemployment benefits are among the most generous in Europe, payable even for net salaries of €6,959 (£5,021) per month. That may seem to favour high earners in a country where the average monthly net salary is just over €2,000, however a spokeswoman for UNEDIC, which administers the benefits says that less than 1,000 unemployed people receive the top amount, out of a total 2.6 million claimants. The current system, negotiated between unions and employers last year, kicks in after four months’ employment. Workers aged under 50 can claim unemployment benefit for two years, while those aged over 50 can claim for three years. On average, benefits are about 65% of employees’ salary. To qualify, people must be registered with the Pôle Emploi jobcentres and be actively seeking work. For those who haven’t worked for long enough to qualify, or at all, the RSA (Revenu de Solidarité Active) is a safety net, providing a minimum wage for the unemployed. A childless single person can receive €514 per month, and a couple with two children €1,079.

Nicola Sturgeon, Bute House (absent a commercial transaction with Michelle Thomson and her husband in the meantime), 6 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4DR.

How many questions do you think you answered correctly?

0-20: You should join the SNP. Because they all say “But we never knew about that!” as well.
21-40: You should join RISE. Because you have some (modest) criticisms of the SNP, but not so many that you can’t approach SNP supporters to beg for their list vote in May.
41-60: You are an anti-Scottish Red-Tory traitor who is always talking Scotland down.

And back to gun crime. The stats in the UK pre and post handgun ban have indicated a rise in crime since the ban. Same trend is in states banning or rather imposing heavy control on firearms. The fact is that proper control and licensing does not affect the criminal use but does affect the legitimate use (sport and self defence) leading to an imbalance. Its a micro example of why we have nuclear weapons, they exist therefore we try to funnel them into the hands of who we consider responsible users a) to deter improper use and b) if required repel improper use through discipline. I personally find the UK situation ridiculous and favour a much wider licensing and permiting system and completely agree with the proper policing of firearms. I'm very happy that wherever you are in London you have an armed police officer within 5 minutes of you. We don't display it or shout from the rooftops but our police are extremely well equipped and trained to counter illegal use and violent/terror acts. A wider band of qualified citizens need empowerment too.

There seems to be no check on whether a recipient is actively seeking work. My french neighbour certainly enjoyed his paid two year holiday. He certainly put in a lot of practice perfecting his barbecue skills.!!
I do not believe this generous system is financially sustainable. I'm not convinced any current french politician has the stomach to reduce the benefits to sensible levels.

Of course that is very carefully selected as well. On the subject on Women-only trains, I would think he would be in favour - after all he has held meetings with Muslim groups were men and women in the audience were segregated - but I suppose that's just a cultural thing!

    Back from une petite vacance...

Having travellled in Asia where there is a lot of abuse against women... women only trains are a really safe way for them to travel.

On the other hand women only taxis have been banned in this country as against equal opps etc....

I would favour anything that kept my daughter safe....

After today's news, some northern towns do not seem to be safe for women.

I think that Cameron made a good point today over the jungle of Calais transferring to Kent. Knowing the joys of getting on a ferry between Dieppe and Newhaven I have often wondered why it is necessary to have my passport checked three times in this age of computers. The French would happily see the camps emptied, but quite why the occupants wish to get to the UK where the benefits are no better than here seems obscure. Maybe language has something to do with it, but the systems in the UK are less stringent than here. Maybe instead of looking across the Channel the means of dealing with immigrants should be looked at in a fair way, as there are far more ex-pats living in the EU than there are peoples from even the eastern parts living in the UK. According to the latest figure I can find over 1M ex-pats live in Spain, 500,000 in France whereas maybe 300, 000 from France and 50,00 from Spain have moved the other way. Of course the figures do not appeal to the likes of UKIP, but I have little sympathy for their likes.

Need to include the Poles, Romanians and various other EU citizens living in the UK as well OFH to make a fair comparison. Last I remember reading was that there are 600,000 poles living in the UK - but as they have free movement, who actually knows?
Cameron was scaremongering as the agreement between France and UK for the checking of passports in France by the UK Border force has nothing to do with the EU - either party could cancel it tomorrow. If it was not in the interest of France. I am sure they would cancel it tomorrow.

I'd have no issues with a worldwide ban on guns, same as nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, etc...

My issue with people defending guns is that they always use the 'good guys' excuse, but as it's often the case, 'good guys' often own guns that get into the wrong hands.

I don't see it as a civil liberty, just get rid. There are so few cases of guns actually helping people compared to the unnecessary deaths and injuries they cause, I can't understand why anyone would want society armed to the teeth...

In the example you gave, what proof is there that if the person being burgled had a gun the whole thing could have been prevented?

Because France is a very different country to the UK. Due to the distance between most towns and job security the job market isn't as open as other countries, and it makes more sense for the economy to pump cash into peoples' pockets rather than give corporations/the rich tax breaks.

The financial crisis last time round could easily have been solved by doing quantitative easing for people rather than banks. People make the economy work, and giving them cash to spend (rather than crippling them with debt/poor wages/wonga loans) would instantly stimulate it back into action.

Capitalism in it's current form is coming to it's end. People have been squeezed too hard.
