I think it would be really difficult to reach consensus on this unless specific criteria was laid down. Take Rooney for example. There is no doubt in my mind that he is a top player but would I rate him as world class? No way. I recognise his ability as a good player. I don't see him as being overrated but I firmly believe that he has under achieved in his career and because he has never fully fulfilled his potential, I understand why some see him as overrated.
The most overrated player we have IMO considering all criteria is Rob Green. He's on a big contract, has international caps and is basically no better than average. The most overrated player I've known has to be John O'Shea. A complete donkey who has made tens of millions out of the game.
Gerard and Keane were different types of players Col and it's hard to separate them at club level IMO. Of course both had some similar traits and both made invaluable contributions to their clubs when needed in critical matches but they simply can't be compared at international level. Keane played in a sh1te irish team and was regularly the stand out player against any opposition. Gerrard never fully and consistently fulfilled his potential at international level.
Gary Neville was England's best right back for many many years. He was very good, including at international level.
Have to be honest and say I despise Roy Keane. A complete pri•k. Off the pitch, I wouldn't want to be in his company for a single second. On the pitch however, he was incredible and a player I would want beside me when the going got tough.
I agree that Gerrard was yet another of the "golden generation" not to fulfill his potential at international level. However, I believe that was down to terrible coaching decisions which saw him played out of position or in the wrong formation. That goes also for the unbelievably talented Paul Scholes. I think Keane was an excellent player. I just happen to think that Gerrard was better. He was a better passer, he was quicker and in his prime quite a freak of nature.
Gary Neville was underrated if anything. He was incredibly consistent at club and international level. IMO, one of the best fullbacks in modern day football.
