He doesn't need the money. He probably enjoying doing less serious roles (shame the audience hates it).
Not so much serious - he was great in Analyse This and Meet the Parents. But I think he's kind of allowed himself to become a caricature of those roles.
What's he supposed to be then guys? He's ancient so what roles are left.... whinging near to death crap or have a bit of fun with it. He's got to get on with it.
I'm not saying not to have fun. But demeaning roles playing a 70 yr old letch making crass gags to half-naked teenage girls seems desperate rather than fun. There are I'm sure plenty of fun and serious roles still left out there for him. This is De Niro we're talking about. We see the likes of Michael Keaton, Michael Caine and Tom Hanks demonstrating that.
Hanks has been lucky that he's built up a relationship with Speilberg, an excellent director who makes proper films with good stories. Its similar for Caine, who has managed to attach himself to Nolan, which helps both; Nolan gets an experience actor and Caine stays relevant with anticipated film.
Those were just two examples, there are other senior actors. I think you're also looking at it slightly simplisticly. For example Michael Caine has done a couple of lovely lesser known films called Youth and Mr Morgan's Last Love. Neither are Nolan iirc and neither are commercial pop brands. But if we're questioning De Nero's ability to get roles, I'm sure he's more than capable of getting those types also. Just wont be commercial brands. Imo it's more a case of poor judgement on his part.
Watched Everest...mweh...I've read both Jon Kraukauer (there at the time) and Joe Simpson's book on the discussion within the mountaineering world in the aftermath. Film really plays down the responsibilty of the guides and totally omits the disgraceful behaviour of the South African team (seen only once in the film) during the disaster and no mention at all of the Indian team... It also brushes over just how heroic the Russian climber (only guy not to use oxygen) was in the amount of times he went up and down the mountain to try and rescue people during the tragedy... Only thing it did get across was the lunacy of the guided tourist rat race up that stupid mountain. Nice fluff piece on two irresponsible guides who succumbed to money over judgement because they died as a result.
EDIT: Not for a while. Or should I say... limited? You look at Hanks for example and he broke ppl's perception of him through Philadelphia. As an actor you have to try to do that. I wish De Niro would at least try. Maybe at 70+ it's too late now.
Wasn't meant to be an in depth comment, but rather that its helps as an older actor to either maintain a relationship with an excellent director or be prepare to work with an up and comer. Kietel did the same with Tarantino, going further and put up the money to help Tarantino to actually make films. In fact its those films that help over shadow the stinkers, Caine has also made, Journey 2, Gnemo and Juliet, Bewitched and others that are just forgettable. However I'd agree that De Niro has picked poor choices in the last few years. But I think that stems more him being bored with doing the more serious roles, which was pretty much all he did in his early career, and wanting to do something else.
Yeah; limited....it's the same role twisted to each film...don't get wrong...have a good career doing it...Tom Cruise has realised it more or less bar his scientology meanderings...but it doesn't make you a great actor which is claime about De Niro....and Pacino to be honest.
Tbf he's taken a leap 20 years ago in films like Awakenings, Wag the Dog and even Frankenstein. He just doesnt do it enough now. I dont mind if he makes some turkeys... that happens. But this particular film Dirty Grandpa is just a new low. Just no need for it.
I watched everest in cinema. I felt it was all about the cinematography and making people feel the vertigo.
