Both characters had aged 40 years since their first appearance on the big screens.
They aren't going to be the same people after 40 years of living.
Rocky being all sage like wasn't that big a shock.
Yeah was a bit slow in the first 2 movies, but he has done a little living since then.
Becoming world champion, losing the title, getting it back, losing Apollo, losing his wealth, retiring, losing his wife, losing Paulie, being a father.
All that is going to leave its mark.

On the box office/superhero rant type convo.

I also think this is behind this latest race kuffuffle. All the actors take themselves seriously and think it is an art form until they need cash and do a formulaic blockbuster. Then they thing the self serving pat on the back awards are actually about art not promotion.

Will Smith is a perfect example

Does films like Independence Day or Suicide squad for cash and image hype...knowing they are not going to get an oscar for them.

Then he thinks of his "art" and does a wee indie or politics piece and think thats my oscar..except they are all doing it.

Then the conplaint comes in that its a white producer/cinema dominated industry and thats the reason.

Except it is purely a business model. 70% of the yank population is white and make up 67% of US cinema goers.

17% of the population is Black and make up 12% of the cinema audience..interestingly outdone by hispanics who are second in the audience figures.

It's a business model..why would white producers change their billion dollar industry targeted at the needs of the majority of their customers and risk a hundred million on a black targeted audience?

If you have netflix you see for every ****e white boy american pie rip off there is a black one. Same with Rom Coms...they don't succed because 2/3 rds of the audience doesn't relate and the 12% that could look at it as simply a white film with black actors.

No different than Bollywood or the Chinese film industry. It is an industry.

Its when you take the very small section of the market that is allowed for art or innovation that the problem occurs but then thats an issue for all races..Its why Robert Redford started sundance...to get these non blockbuster films made.

Looking at the top 20 male/female black superstars their net worth is 8 billion...can they not do a Redford and build a niche industry and buy or build cinema chains in target areas for the films they want to make?

Its why , BBC Film, Film Four etc were created...to fill a niche the US industry ignored....right up until things like Four Weddings etc when it was proved to them they could make money....

no.... but han solo tried his best and was actually way off cos in the original movie he was far more.... impressive, solid, hard edged character who was in control while being out of control

the han solo in new movie was almost child like at times and who knows.

I thought the aim with rocky was "become mick" and he did a really good job of it. I thought it was actually well acted within the character and the storyline was well done as well.

Well the way I saw it with Solo, was that he was a smuggler, who lived life on the edge every minute and had little control over his destiny, who gave a **** about no one but himself (The Han from ANH who wouldn't help the rebellion and wanted to slink off like a pussy with his reward, till the final trench run of course).
Then he was essentially tamed, by the rebellion, by Leia, and given responsibility, became a leader, hard edged and uncompromising, but still with that roguish streak, the Han we all know and love.
When all that went to ****, when Ben went batshit and fell to the darkside and his marriage to Leia went down the drain, he regressed back to the childlike "I dont give a ****" Han that he was before that fated run in with Luke and Obi Wan in Mos Eisley.

that is true, but what he also was was a tough guy from the off. he killed gredo then they inserted the jabba the hut scene in the new hope movie when cgi allowed it.

    The old han was bascially.

    1. total ham in the intro of him and the guys who came to get him. it was abrahams aping the original death star scenes but failed

    2. nice gun cheiw ****e o nthe planet, he was like a child.

    3. he then gets serious.. its all ture.. all of it.. and the son and ending.

I felt he was too comedic in the movie for too long so didn't come off as the old han solo. it came off worse than even being a guy who leaned nothing from it all.

however rocky did come off as built upon the old rocky in a new situation and as you well put it built upon all that happened to him across all those movies.

I dont like that it's on channel 5. At least on BBC2 you didnt have to worry about needless breaks. As long as Carter is still making them I think it'll be good.

They can complain about the awards ceremonies and juries but the real issue is with the film studios and casting execs. The awards juries can only judge and nominate the films that have been made. It's up to the studios to make films that have more or exclusively black subject matter and the casting people to cast more black actors in key roles that will go up for nominations. That's where the heart of the problem lies, in the film making, not the film judging. Then there's the wider social problem with race, blackness in this case, in America and elsewhere that is the root cause as you mention. Why aren't more black people encouraged into acting and making films in all the roles that entails ?? Why do the studios continue to see black people as not a significant enough market for their films ??

Big part of my post...it is not black...or white it is green.

Old white dudes who make millions from making blockbusters for a majority white audience will not go out on a limb for 12% of the market audience.....they really do not care about the oscars bar free advertising for a film that has already made it's boxoffice.

My main question stands....8 billion net. Why are the most powerful and richest black players in the industry still calling for the old white dudes to take the chance when they have the capital and apparently motivation to do so themselves?

watched the 1st 4 episodes of heroes reborn last night, not bad so far, can probably see my self getting back into this tbh, not sure you can really watch it unless youve seen the old heroes as there are lots of mentions of hiro, odessa and many characters from the original run.

some jap girl who can teleport into computer games has hiro nakamura's sword, in this its her fathers sword? will be interesting to see how this links with hiro tbh.

ill keep yas posted on this :)

He's thinking about the money and an easy life. His days as a top actor ended a while ago.

Does he look like he needs the money? I find his film choices very strange nowadays. Why not wait for the right script? It's such a cringeworthy role. This was someone who was once considered the best actor in the world, now just ruining his rep imo.
