  3. Naturally. Don't want anyone misunderstanding why a phone should be used at the dinner table.

I do get my phone out when with other people but I can multitask and text while still looking and talking to the other person so not really as much of a big deal.

However I agree it is annoying when trying to talk and someone is staring down at their phone... does make you wonder if they are paying any attention.

Rule among my family/friends, when attending a party or gathering, all phones go in a bowl on the hall table unless you declare on arrival you are waiting for an urgent call (not txt or whatsap). Everyone seems to enjoy themselves <ok>

Is that a variation on everyone putting their car keys in a bowl?

Sound advice, MITO, and I'll give it some serious consideration, but I'll have to choose carefully how I do it

That's the only reason, for an urgent call, and that's fine; even then if it's urgent they can call back, surely? But have the phone to hand anyway

Thing is wishy if you are as close to her as you said before, she will respect your opinion and will be horrified.

It's a strange one, ademuzzy; though I've known her for 20 years, I don't feel close to her. Don't know what it is, can't put my finger on it, but there are certain things I don't tell her (not about her, about me) because I don't know how she'll react, can't trust her with them. (And no, I'm not a tranny or axe murderer or anything like that! <laugh>)

It's also I get the impression she prefers other people's company to mine and she kind of feels sorry for me, so graces me with her company now and then.

I know exactly what you mean. Do you have these feelings with your other friends?

Sometimes; I have those feelings with work colleagues. The thing is she comes from a close family and me and my family have always been at one another's throats. I took the conscious decision to walk away for good three years ago. I don't regret it, but I get tired of having other people's nice lives shoved down my throat

Fuclkng idiotically, I got the Radio Times version of Trivial. men against women - we had no chance against the square-eyed crones. Not that I'm bitter. A few of us played that Cards Against Humanity thing. Absolutely hilarious (but we hypocritically took the Hillsborough card out <whistle> ). Dunno if you've played, but one of the questions was "What did the US air drop to help Iraqi orphans after the war in 2003?" Guess who had an answer card with 'Jimmy Saville' on it? <laugh>

Best was my niece has a one-year old. Totally made Christmas. And for @ 8 hours, apart from a Skype to Australia to talk to our nephew and his fiancee, nobody wen't near laptos, tablets or phones. Best Chrimbo for years.

And yes Wishi, it's infuriating. my daughter's at uni now, so I only see her one in three weekends, and we go for Sunday lunch at the Toby carvery. She spends the whole time on her wretched ****ing phone to her boyf/mates/fellow students, then tries to say she's researching her next assignment.

But I'm under no illusions though - I am that boring. :emoticon-0114-dull:
