I'm a bit surprised by this news to be honest, there was talk of him going to Aston Villa or the MLS, what a player he was for us, in his prime, he was one of the best defenders in the premier league, possibly in europe as well.

He's retired AND gone to Villa,
should still improve their team though.

Cracking player, never the same after his knee injuries though so no surprise at all he's retired.

Good for him , no doubt he can retire in financial comfort and will hopefully have half decent knees to walk on.

I heard a rumour that as Torres won't be extending his stay at Atletico, Vidic got worried he might be playing against him in the Milan derby next year and got scared <ok>

I'm probably in a minority but, while I thought he was a very good defender, he wasn't top class in my opinion.

He was committed and brave but he lacked pace (Torres) and was unnecessarily rash at times. It would be remiss of me to ignore the fact that he was a bit of a blocker when I've previously accused Carragher and Terry of being the same limited kind of defenders. I don't much like blockers, it's an English disease!

Rio Ferdinand was a far superior player. The best centre half the PL has seen without question. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. An absolute gem of a player and a nice guy (fact).

It was SAFs preferred type of partnership, he always had a fast, technical classy CH paired with a no nonsense hard, brave stopper. It worked well for him over the years and I think he hoped Smalling and Jones will turn out the same (Smalling is already starting to look like he will make it and Jones is still very young for a CH in the Vida role).

    Which bit?

Did Fergie always play with one classy one hard CH?

Has Smalling started to show promise at a very young age for a CH?

Is Jones even younger than Smalling and has lots of time to develop?

You are very easy to amuse tonight :emoticon-0100-smile

I think Vidic needed to be. We still had a weakness at RB throughout that period. Rio was clearly the better footballer but you needed somebody to be that monster at the back while Rio patrolled. I think they complemented each other very well.

Also just found this. Of all the players to have made more than 200 PL appearances, Nemanja Vidic has the best win percentage (211 games, 149 wins). That's incredible. Who's that coming over the hill?

Almost everyone in the world is wrong then <ok>
I would say Rio Ferdinand was a far superior twat, but I think John Terry probably edges that contest too.

Having met both of them I can indeed confirm that Terry is the bigger twat.

    Can't deny that.
I have heard good things about both, and I have seen Rio say some really ******ed things.
But JT seems to be a bit of a degenerate off the field.
