Interesting read.... I think underneath the stats, this season is literally a game of 2 halves.

I think everyone has known that Pellè wasn't the be all and end all, but part of something.

Charlie's signing puts the cat amongst the pigeons, as we now have Pellè, Austin and Manè as a trio up front or as individuals, not to mention the various individual midfield combinations.

I'd like to see the end of season comparison stats in a few months.....

 

He's got a nice fistful of shirt in that photo. Weren't we just complaining that shirt-pulling is never called?

Good article. Can't really disagree with anything in it. None of our strikers were bad by any means, but OTOH they weren't prolific enough to take us to the next level, either. It is up to Austin to do that. Yes, he also adds depth and allows us to move Pelle or Juanmi if we wish. But I don't think we bought him just to be depth, we bought him to be The Man.

Wow Gaston was a creative midfielder, must of missed that part. How can someone be creative on the treatment table?

 

Well hang on a moment, WHU'S Andy Carroll was becoming a better striker every day he spent on the treatment table last season, so I think Gaston can have some leeway.

 

Noted the absence from that list of Martin Chivers and Ron Davies. I am sure they would have had a ratio of around 0.4, maybe more because they were prolific scorers.

 

So was Mick Channon for someone not a true out and out striker. The problem is you are never comparing like with like, as the game has changed so much. One of the reasons we all noticed the great Bobby Moore was that he was a defender with a brain. There weren't many! Bobby would be a highly sought after player today, not many of the old school would last ten minutes before being red-carded.

Interesting article that poses more questions than it answers (always a good thing, I think). Our readiness to discard Pelle from our affections bothers me. He is a proven Premier League striker. His "decline" last season was due in part to the poor end of season the team experienced and a lot of misfortune - how many times did he hit the woodwork? If he can get a glamour move to Italy then good luck to him, but he can still perform for SFC in my view.

In Austin we seem to have snatched an "over 'ere son, and I'll get it" striker. He scores the scrappy ones when boots are flying, and his goal against United showed anticipation and a football brain. I can't believe that a top PL club wasn't willing to take a punt on this bloke. But very glad we have!

 

He was very creative in making up new injuries to stop him having to play with the Big Boys

Chivers was 0.55 and Davies was 0.56!

That doesn't surprise me. Ron Davies scored 43 goals in all competitions in his first season with us, which was our first in the old Division One, and later on Sir Matt Busby (after Ron scored 4 at Old Trafford) called him "the greatest centre forward in Europe". Chivers wasn't bad either, but we don't talk about him...

Thanks for that information. That is a terrific rate. At their peak, wonder how much they would command in today's transfer market. Around 75m?

Who knows? If Sir Matt was right and Ron was the best in Europe he has to be up in the £80 - £100 million level today surely? And if that sounds over the top, remember that he scored 4 against essentially the same Man U team that had won the European Cup a few months before.
