Just been listening to Will Smith interviewed on Front Row on R4, talking about his latest film, Concussion, based on true events. Smith plays Nigerian-born pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, who investigates the high number of deaths in American Football from head injuries. Apparently as many as 1 in 3 pro footballers are carrying some degree of ongoing brain damage. Also true to a lesser degree in other contact sports like Aussie Rules, both rugby codes, and association football. Makes you think...

Don't go to any Bitterne Boy team. I use to coach there and the guy is annoying. Eastleigh (not Eastleigh Imperials) had great coaches (ex soton fc youth coaches) a few years back, haven't a clue if they still do it.

Exactly that. The impact level in both Rugby codes is bad enough, but the level in Grid Iron is ridiculous. Problem is, the cat is out of the bag. It would be difficult to go back and keep the USP and popularity. And the US Football authorities aren't going to shoot themselves in the foot by protecting the player, even though they should.
First thing I'd do is contact the local FA and speak to their youth officer. They will probably know which clubs have the best reputation for coaching quality.
I drove Route 66 with my son last November in a 1965 Ford Mustang - we were doing great until a little old lady crashed into us in Albuquerque. The Police were round the corner and were on the scene within a minute. Nobody was hurt - but the police couldn`t have been more helpful - they helped pull the wing away from the tyre, then escorted us, lights flashing, one car behind, one in front to our motel, and they were apologetic that our trip had been disrupted. They then helped sort out the insurance issues. My lasting memory from R66 was, from Santa Monica to Chicago, was that we didn`t meet anyone who was unhelpful, or miserable - quite the opposite. The people were great, and inquisitive.
