Chinchilla's are far to small for that, at least in my case!

I know it's possible but to say a car needs to be able to do 600-800 on one full or its not usable is a little odd since many mass produced petrol engines don't do that. My car can't do that. I'm sure most people on this forum don't have cars that can do 800 miles on one tank.

Proof the technology works. Its expensive because there isn't economy of scale yet and newer techs are always more expensive.

At one point a £2000 PC was less powerful than a £100 smartphone is now. It wasn't THAT long ago.

That's just being a market economy. Trying to get money where you can. Lots of "waste products" are sold as primary products in their own right.

Again though. It provides an aftermarket use for the batteries that is feasible and useful and doubles the amount of time a battery can be used even after it leaves the car (regardless of motive). The current problem is there arnt ENOUGH old batteries yet to really kick start this industry.

Technically maybe, however the convenience of charging at home might sway the market.

For a time there's been discussions of supercapacitor arrays making batteries obsolete. When that technology is developed you will be able to charge your car faster than you can fill it from a pump. We're probably a decade or two away from that at best though.

How far do you drive to work that you do more than 250 miles in an average day? Or even a much worse than average day?

The only time I do more than 250 miles is on a long trip.

It's always going to be more economical (at least in the foreseeable future) to create power at one centralised location than in a car.

The moment that changes the power companies will do away with giant power plants and just park cars around town to power our houses... <laugh>

I wouldn't buy an electric car today... It's not worth it today. It probably won't be worth it 15 years from now.

30 years from now though petrol could very well be just a quirky thing nerdy enthusiasts drive.

you might be missing my point on...

if i want to go to work, come home then have the flexibility to turn round and bury the bodies after i kill the neighbours i can do it......

If i have to charge for 8 hours after a days travel i am seriously losing flexibility.

also I am sorry but computing power and battery analogy doesn't work. With semi conductors there was a very clear theoretical projection for speeds down to what could be place do nthe chips.

with batteries the limit is the chmaical reactions and those are known.. it is not a progression its a whole new solution needing to be invented to product faster charging and longer lasting chemical reactions

Oh and I'd do that 250 at LEAST every 1.5 days. depends who want sot go where..

Just been testing driving couple of cars.

Put down deposit for the A3 <ok>

Preferred it to the BMW to be honest, and a lot cheaper.

Were going to give me barely anything for mine in part exchange so prob won't bother and instead try sell it privately for double what they offered.

    good plan.

get it washed and valeted (or do it yourself) and get the thing on the interweb early tomorrow morning. most buyers on looking cos most dealers on pumping ads in.

another bit of advice given to me by that bmw master mechanic is put it in on the higher end of pricing. people will think its in better condition.

    Good choice <ok>

Is it a 110 bhp TDI?

Autotrader does cost, but equally it's the No.1 site for selling cars. Give it a week on gumtree and then pay the fee if it hasn't gone, would be my advice. The last thing you want is a car hanging around.

    Sure is <ok>
So different from mine, clutch is a lot lower and gear stick barely moves when moving from one gear to another... literally stalled it as I went to move it off the forecourt where didn't realise quite how low the clutch was <laugh>

Yeah mines, MOT'd until August so not too bad, if can't shift before I get new one i'll mark it as off road so not paying insurance either.

And you can with current gen electrics.

Never made such an analogy. What I said was about prices coming down. As they will for electric cars when there is more than one manufacturer of them and the technology ages.
