Obviously, since no one is suggesting they were bribed to give the wrong result, the obvious answer is that they made a mistake or they couldn't see it, so what does anyone expect the answer to be. There is no explanation that will make it right. Sometimes in life things just happen.

We'll always have referees, love them or hate them. We will probably have technology to determine whether the ball went over what ever line or a pass forward was offside but a computer will never determine if a foul is a red card or a yellow card, or even what a foul is or what a dive is. A referee will always make mistakes but will always endeavour not to!

Not so sure what that will do. Take the City game this week, this is what would have been said:

"The referee assistant in the far side couldn't see it through the posts, even if indeed he had managed to be running at the same speed as Sterling (one of the quickest players in the league).

The referee was in a fairly good position for the build up of play but unfortunately another player blocked his view at that moment"

What good would that have done?

It was one of those incidents that was very tight and very difficult to pick out in the normal game play. Frustrating for the team that misses out, but then maybe the manager should focus on why his defenders left a 58m player unmarked in the box.

Exactly what I think...as no malice or deliberate cheating involved, the answers are predictable.

I'd like to see refs microphones introduced like in rugby though - if true I'm not sure that Atkinson should be telling Jagielka that "the defending was brilliant".

Another point as to why there has been no comment from officials is that once you start answering, you never stop. It seems to e forgotten that it is a game played and judged by humans....it will never be perfect. And it never will be perfect....if you want perfection and total fairness, play a computer game.

And even then it's a farce. My lad beat me 1-0 last night on FIFA and I pressed the correct button for my defender to head it clear but the bloody computer moved the wrong player and my lad scored.

Bloody computers. Give me a human and subbuteo :(

I don't play computer games, nor do I expect perfection, but I do expect accountability, and I don't think it is out the ordinary to expect the governing body to acknowledge and apologise for errors, that change games.
I didn't see the game, (although I did see the incident on news reports), so I don't know which side of the pitch the linesman was, but gather from FLT's comments that the linesman was on the other side of the field.
If his view was obscured, then say that and the matter is closed.
Yes humans make mistakes, but in my experience, most decent humans acknowledge and apologise for their mistakes.
I just don't see why match officials be any different?

Your stats page must be a link off the one you posted. Nevertheless, interesting. 16 weirdest transfers [why 16, I don't know. Doesn't matter]. No.2 is Kevin Keegan to Southampton. I know us older ones bang on about this from time to time, but it was absolutely gobsmackingly astonishing. The paragraph in the link gives some idea. It says:

Today, swapping Hamburg for Southampton would represent a step up, but not in February 1980: Hamburg were defending their Bundesliga title while Saints were re-establishing themselves in the top flight. Keegan, meanwhile, had won his second consecutive Ballon d’Or with the German club by a landslide six weeks earlier.

And yet, manager Lawrie McMenemy announced Mighty Mouse would be joining them that summer. It would’ve been no less surprising if he’d signed the actual Mighty Mouse.

The months that followed only made the transfer seem more absurd. Keegan played in the 1980 European Cup Final as Hamburg lost 1-0 to his former club Liverpool, then captained England in the European Championship, before landing on the Hampshire coast.
As for Southampton, even more impressive than the coup was successfully keeping it a secret. Imagine that tomorrow, the European Footballer of the Year – so, Lionel Messi – was unveiled at Crystal Palace and nobody knew about it. Twitter would combust.

Certainly seems that way, credit where due.

Be interesting if Bayern can draw City in CL <whistle>
