50p blimey that went up! when I did the rounds it was all £ s d .. best live show I saw was show waddy waddy but it was close between them and all the other live venue acts ...Tiffany's always a last place on the list of where shall we go .. found the birds there a tad snobby ! used to get 8 pints for a pound ....
In the late 70's/early 80's the casino on Anchor Road was a nightclub themed on motor racing but I can't remember it's name. Went to a stag night there once and attempted to drive home totally pissed. Got half way home and realised I was going to kill myself so stopped, left the car (my fav Escort RS2000 Custom) and walked home. I think I started to grow up at that point. Mandrake was brill. This morning on Radio 2 they played Phil Collins "In the air tonight" and I was right back there . The Drake, combined with that song, is just such an atmospheric memory. The Locarno - with its "starlight" ceiling - saw the young Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel there in their silk/satin outfits. Memories, memories!!
Me and Mrs R&W abandoned the Alex club when Pete (Yellow Cabs) took it over and tried to take it upmarket. We migrated to La Rocca on the triangle. I drove past there a couple of weeks ago whilst back in Bristol and see it's still there! That was almost (but not quite) as good as the Alex.
In the 60's I saw Ike & Tina, Amen Corner, Arthur Brown etc etc at the Pavilion in Bath. It was the Top Rank on Tuesdays and Saturdays and the Locarno on Thursdays where I saw the Temptations and Marmalade. Loved the Stones at Longleat. 70's it was Platform 1 and Maxims up Park Street. Wiz - 'I used to do this...' So did I. I had an LI 150 and then an SX 200 from 65-68. Were you a Vespa or Lambretta Mod ?
Neither, I had an NSU Prima D 150l with a 12v electric start... please log in to view this image Did you ever take part in the ritual of driving around the big round a bout on the centre, we used to do it regularly, sometimes there would be well over 100 of us buzzing around, lads from all over used to join us, drove the fuzz mad, we would all meet up in(by) that scooter shop just pass the 3 lamps junction, you could buy anything in there, parts, accessories, parkers and artic fur hats, all makes of scooters regardless of age, great days...
'Did you ever take part in the ritual of driving around the big round a bout on the centre' Oh yes and the raids on W-S-M and Weymouth. The biggest scuffle ever for me was in 67. Hundreds of us were locked inside the Rank as there were Rockers from 'all over' outside. Think it was a Mod called Angelo who led us out (I was at the back), luckily the Rockers ran, we outnumbered them at least 5-1, but we needed that as they were all bigger/older than us. Went 'off' in the Centre after and was front and back in the Western Daily the next morning. I bought an Outrigger exhaust at the shop near the 3 Lamps. Most of my stuff I got from another place in in town, can't remember the name of the shop though. For some reason I think was up the Gloucester Road. Oh and I got my Parka from a Army & Navy Nissen Hut somewhere on the Somerset moors.
Platform 1 was also frequented by a few members of the Alan Dicks team of the mid-late 70's Wasn't Platform 1 where Ray Cashley got glassed in fact ?

Saw The Damned, The Skids, The Ruts ... Attended these gigs. The Skids were backed by a band called the Edge who the Punks present took exception to, lead guitarist and bass walked off leaving the vocalist and drummer to complete the [odd] set. Different times post Damned gig City and Rovers had a punch up that spilled into Silverblades, and interrupted a skating gala.
Funny how these things work I was there ten years before you, but I had the same feeling towards it. Apart from some things which have been well grounded into my soul having learned them as a 17 year old (how to wire a plug etc), the most important things I learned were how to roll a joint, how to chat to strange girls (there were lots of very strange girls at Weston Tech), how to get very drunk most pleasantly, and which parties to attend for all of the above. Meanwhile, David Bowie was teaching me about rock n roll cool. Hope I was a good pupil ! I got thrown out in my second year for my attendance record, so probably not Thing is, I have a string of letters after my name now so who bloody cares
You lot were lucky, we had pub crawls till 11 as pubs all shut then. Up to the Two Rivers (or the dril hall) mass fight with Caldicot or the squadies from Beachly camp (lucky I was likeable so everyone got on with me, so I just watched ) and then finished by 12:30. That was it for us unless we find someone's house to trash. Lucky bastards.
