I have the pleasure of travelling from Northamptonshire to Warwickshire week days for work using the M1 for part of the journey, because as far as I was aware motorways were direct and allowed you to maintain a decent speed. Recently we were allowed to return to a 70 mph speed limit after what must have been 2 + ****ing years to put a new central reservation down the middle.

Today I hear the stretch of road will now be returning to 50mph to allow them to do more work creating a 'smart motorway' which from my understanding just means you get another lane or something but have the joy of going slower for most of the day.

I don't know what has pissed me off more, that they are slowing the M1 down permanently or that the highways authority are that incompetent they didn't combine the works to be carried out at the same time. Some people say that the Germans don't have a sense of humour, I'm sure they would be pissing themselves with how useless these people are, I can't see it taking the Germans or any other Nation 2 plus years to put a barrier in the middle of the road only to do some more work on the same area less than 4 months later?

With the work that I do I understand these things aren't that simple however 4 years work on the M1 for what is being accomplished is beyond batshit crazy

These 50 zones are a load of bollocks mostly.

The speed limit should be 80 with more serious punishments for those doing over 90. 70 is an outdated concept but the biggest issue on motorways is every ****er and his wife doing 65 in the third lane with two empty lanes to his left.

Sounds very similar to what they're doing on the M3, been well over two years they've had the 50 limit after J2 which now goes down to J4 or beyond as that's where I exited yesterday.

You're fortunate you can travel at 50, in London, where they're building BoJo's vanity project, multiple Cycle Superhighways, all at the same time, large swathes of the city are barely averaging 5mph. It only needs one minor incident in the wrong place and you have virtual gridlock. The latest wheeze is to have works on Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges and Elephant & Castle and many roads in between on both sides of the river all at the same time. Pure madness...

I go from chalk to cheese switching from French roads back to the madness of the U.K.

15 years ago I worked promoting a brilliant system from the USA that ate the existing road, melted everything with a thunderbird type high temperature and re used and modified all materials before laying perfect seamless road surfaces. I spent two weeks on shoot making a video and it was bloody brilliant

No real noise and could be done 24 hours

What happened? They faced massive bullying from the big boys and government until the idea and franchise in the UK was brought out and hidden just so that tech can't be used . I was told that the amount of job losses would of been devastating to the road industry so they brought the tech so it can't be used

Three weeks I saw the same system being used in France ... Does about 10km a hour and a crew of four people and only one Lorry following with back up materials

My local city of Beziers in France is very busy and as soon as traffic gets to capacity then France is on it
Since last year they have built hundreds of miles of new roads bridges etc and every time is perfect

The tax payers money for roads doesn't even put into the roads it's a disgrace. Criminals the lot of them

    Easy one
Just look at the amount of new cars been allowed to go on sale in the UK

What is the average now 3 in a family? While we have the worse trains in Europe

    What do cars run on?

    What a bloody mess

Plus a culture has developed about cars in the UK ... They are all polished up and a real status symbol

Most are on finance as they have to be and then follows the hidden taxes

My motor I got for France cost me £1400 if it was a left hooker then it's worth €10,000 over here ... People use cars for what they are a tool of transport

I used to travel from junction 1-8 every weekday, on a Friday I used to stay at work until 20:00 as there was no point in trying to get home before then.
    Certainly don't miss those days

I walk to work all of 600 yards. You should either move or get a job nearer home :)

Money is **** in Northampton, for some strange reason my company pay decent enough money, I suspect I would be on 15k+ less a year and I'm not sure my mrs, my ex mrs or the kids would be too happy with that

They were doing roadworks on the M1 for most of the stretch from the start to Watford when I lived in Watford almost 10 years ago...I am pretty sure they wouldn't be so keen on average speed checks if it didn't generate so much income.

Agree with DT though, the roads here in France are on another level...so much smoother, so much less traffic and not the heavy surveillance.

Have to say I love driving in France, the Route Nationals are almost motorway standard, can do Calais to Colmar over 600km in 7 hours with a couple of leisurely breaks and the motorway from Clermont Ferand to Pezanas in the South is one of Europes great roads especially with Sir Norman Fosters Viaduct Du Millau on route.....

Nice to hear that and when you see the civil engineering involved you have to take your hat off to the French

The M23 upgrade up from Brighton was a laugh took 4-5 years to do a small section and was 3 times over budget ... What you have now is a windy mess which is still mega dangerous as its a must and fog bucket My French friends who have seen it said the French would have built a bridge in two years maximum for 25% of the final cost above the existing road
The section made over £.5m in speeding fines in 6 years including me £90, a course for doing 45mph in a 40 zone as I accelerated at the road work end
It's our money and most went into ****ers pockets
The section of the M25 near my home in the UK is still concrete
Today in France I went and picked up some concrete and saw 14 cars on a road from heaven. I was passed doing 80 by a lady in a clio
    It just works
