The odds on all gaming machines are always in the houses favour.

Take Roulette for example, there are 37 numbers if you include zero, and if you have £1 on a number and it comes in you get back £36. So if you bet £1 on every number on the wheel it would cost you £37 and you'd only get back £36. Losing £1 a spin. That's a 2.8% swing in the houses favour. So you may win from time to time but over a long period of time you are guaranteed to lose, as you never get paid out at fair odds when you win.

Slots usually have an even bigger swing in the houses favour, they usually run at between 6-10% in the houses favour depending on how much you stake. The machines in pubs are even more of a scam, you'll often see 72% on the side of those, that's a massive 28% swing in the houses favour. Every £1 you put in there your basically just giving them 28p.

The only way to beat the bookies is betting when the odds are in your favour, that's why it is possible to win on sports betting, if you can identify when the odds favour you. Though that takes a lot of skill to learn, and you'll often get banned online if you get good at it, just as I have.

The only other way you can win long term gambling is on online poker, as you are playing against other players rather than a house. But again that takes a lot of skill to get good at, as it's all about working out percentages. What's the probability of you winning the hand if you call someone's bet? The players that regularly play online for big stakes are usually pretty good, so you have to be very skilled to succeed.

Percentages are easily calculated, patience and discipline are the keys in winning online poker, apart from that I agree mostly.

The percentages at the start of the game are pretty easy to work out, but once the flop comes out I wouldn't have thought it was easy, as you need to take those cards into account. Then you gotta take into account how people are betting. If someone's betting really aggressively at the start you know they've probably got a high pair.

It's quite a complex game to master from what I've seen.

I used to follow Eddie's briefcase jobs. But now I find it easier to just stand in a field setting fire to £50 notes.

When the flop has landed you have roughly a 2% chance of getting each of your cards on the turn and river.

In other words if you have 4 spades on the flop then there are 9 left in the deck, ergo an 18% chance of hitting your flush.

Betting and calling are (or should be) based upon your position and your cards. If you are 1st to play you may raise by 3 or 4 times the BB if you have an AK, however you should not really be calling the same bet with those cards.

Not sure to be honest, Simon. I have seen other people writing it, so thought, just this once, I'd copy them. Think I'll just stick to my own original material from now on though<ok>
