Just read in a few Sunday papers that Man Utd are going to make an approach to Newcastle for Joey Barton. I was gob smacked at this, as much as I rate Barton as a player (not as a person) I would never have him down as a Man Utd type of player or someone that Ferguson would want to work with.
    What other transfers shocked you?
I guess the biggest one for me was Maurice Johnston signing for Rangers after being a Celtic hero. Anyone from Glasgow or the west of Scotland will tell you just how massive this signing was, especially as he was also a Catholic (Rangers had never signed a Catholic, until then).

Carlton Palmer - Sheffield Wednesday to Leeds United.

Having been told by Howard Wilkinson that we were signing an international central defender and rumours started of around 5 top potential players coming. The very next day is was announced it was Carlton Palmer who Wilko stated felt could change his position to be Englands central defender............... I was shocked - truly and deeply shocked. Not just at the transfer but every match Palmer played in. They say he covered every blade of grass in every game but only because his first touch was so poor.

joey barton hasnt really surprised me that much, i've always thought he was underrated. I think andy carroll for 36m to liverpool, just paying that much money for such an average player

What about the money the scousers paid for Henderson?

What about Michael Owen to Man U?

Not as old as all yours but still a shocker considering he'd been turned down by all the bottom half Prem teams.

henderson is a better player and they payed less for him, he's still not worth it by any means but its more easily justified. Owen to Manu was a shock but i was a little bit surprised more teams were'nt willing to take a risk on him.

Another shock was heskey to villa, hes terrible

    Neill Collins to Sheff Utd.

Even though he's the worst player ever, Grayson signed him and made him his first choice central defender. I was expecting to have to put up with him for a while, so it was a real shock to see him go. And, apparently, for more money than we paid!

I was going to say the Cantona sale, not just the sale but the crap price as well. This was when we should have replaced Wilkinson, it was obviously the turning point of his insanity setting in ;)

The ****ona sale was known to me, as I had some contact with the club at that time and the issues relating to ****ona's penis going everywhere, were well known and Wilko wanted him out.

I remember being rendered speechless when a mate told me we'd signed Vinnie Jones, I had to leave the the pub early I was in such shock. I thought it was a terrible move at the time and thought he'd bring nothing but trouble to the club.

How glad I was to be proven wrong !

I was shocked and surprised when we bought David Rocastle from Arsenal, but what was more shocking was the fact wilko didnt play him, he had been outstanding for Arsenal !!!!. May he rest in peace.

Perhaps at that time, but if you look back and see how many goals Chapman scored for us and how he fought for everything, I reckon we were right to keep him. Beside it wasn't his penis doing the damage, well not on this occassion!

Roque Junior. It shocked me how awful he was considering he was part of the brazil team at the time.
