Adebayor scores goals, Palace need those, but I wouldn't want him in my team. Unsure about Townsend, he was the big hope of English football at some point, wasn't he?
That's why I posted this. Adebayor divides opinion for sure. But on a free until the end of the season? I'd take him, though I can understand why others wouldn't. As for Townsend.... £12M? Spurs bust be pissing themselves laughing. Just an opinion.
Adebayor Adebayor can score goals, a terrific player when he's on it...almost unplayable. As it's a short term contract until the summer it seems low risk for Palace. BUT 1) How much are they paying him? 2) How far can some extra goals from the striker position take them? If he scores 8-10 goals over the next few months which earn Palace some extra points will this be enough to fire Palace into European qualification....how much money could they earn from this? (because I reckon they'll be paying Adebayor between £1.5m and £2m for the next 4 months) I would bet that they would only make £1-2m in this scenario, but it would raise the profile of the club and improve their brand ahead of the summer transfer market. However, it is far more likely that Palace won't qualify for Europe....and there is no guarantee that he will have any impact let alone score the goals that will make 3 Premier League places difference (£700k a place). So I see it as a punt where the return would be too low to tempt me if I were in their position. A punt on Adebayor would have made more sense to us / Sunderland / Newcastle to be honest. Townsend **** me that England International tax is steep! We should make it policy not to sign any England caps and from here on in sell any of our players who get capped at the first opportunity to the highest bidder. I may be wrong (and he'll probably have a blinder for the rest of the season now) but he's just a sprinter as far as I'm concerned. £24m on Shelvey and Townsend is criminal. Willing them to get relegated now as I like to see stupidity punished.
The clubs think they are doing good business and that's all that matters really. I wish sometimes we would take a punt on players who have had good reputations in the past early in the transfer window instead of sitting back letting other teams snap up these players.....Look at Charley Austin going for £4m ffs. I would have been in there offering qpr double that to bring him her that's for sure...We need to show some urgency sometimes as we lose out on players because we are too slow off the mark and only seem interested in our past players and that's not the way forward.
Lets not forget Adebayor hasn't played a competitive game in over a year, I think they said Nov 2014. I bet his wages will be high. But none of their strikers are scoring, so nothing to lose. At least they have made an effort to put their lack of goals right, we as a club recognise the issue but then do absolutely **** all about it.
The goat is in the house! I can understand us thinking twice about Austin as he's on £100,000 a week. That's ludicrous imo. Adebeyor has only been signed until the end of the season I think. Yes, high wages but it's short term and he has the experience and class to do a job for anyone. As others have said, Townsend's England caps have bumped the price. Madness at £12M in my view, but it looks like Ashley is desperate enough not to want to go through relegation again.
Charley Austen would be worth £100k/week if he were to keep us up, Much better than the Gomis contract worth a reported £82k/week Anyway Austen is on nowhere near £100k/week as the saints were only saying the other week that money is tight......We have made a **** load of errors this season and not bidding for Austen and selling Shelvey to our rivals are the two biggest imo
Goat: It's been well publicised that Austin's wage demands were high. You are wrong. Again. http://www.london24.com/sport/football/clubs/west-ham/west_ham_chief_questions_charlie_austin_wage_bargain_after_southampton_move_1_4382457 Other sources are available.
Our players wages are high so what....there is no way the saints will pay £100k/week whatever you think.
It's nothing to do with what I think. It's what's been publicised. Whether you believe it or not is up to you, but SOMETHING made a whole clutch of clubs balk at taking him on and it wouldn't be the £4M fee. Apply a bit of logic and come to your conclusion rather than just say that Saints wouldn't pay it with no evidence to back it up.
You add a bit of logic aussie.....Nobody other than the club and individual players will know what each players earns as its all guess work by everyone. And if you think Charley Austin is not a steal at £4m then your mad especially when we paid £8m for Gomis and just spent another £8m on the new Italian player who has scored just 8 goals in 22 games..............I know who my bargain buy would be all day long..
Weeks before the Jan transfer window, Austin said there was no way he would be joining a team in a relegation battle. Where were we on the 2nd of January........17th. Keep up Dai !
Good point Breezy. West Ham courted Austin and THAT'S why they know his wages and THAT'S why their Chairman has gone public. I never said £4M wasn't a good deal. However, at £100,000 a week I can understand why we passed. As Pete says, he wouldn't have joined us anyway. The Paloschi deal looks a good 'un.
