Can't you just smear deep heat all over your back, then watch Smalling burst into tears as he rubs his little eyes? Or poo. Gone off yoghurt. Salmonella.

Smearing something keeps nasty wardens off you in the asylum. I hear.

My Dad has for years seen shirt pulling as the biggest evil facing football. He proposed in all seriousness, the concept of "paper shirts." He thinks it's a great idea, the shirt pulling culprit will be banged to rights, by having a ripped piece of the paper shirt in their hand. The genius. But overlooks; basic comfort, the "dual shirt pull", the British weather, stoppages for replacing tattered garments, the profits of global sportswear manufacturers, and incorrectly given yellow cards for unintentional chest bearing, etc etc.

    Concerned,

Paper shirts, no. But I do see a case for hi-tech shirts with weaker seams. They could be designed to give way under a certain amount of strain. Very easy to implement. Obviously, replica shirts wouldn't. :)

How about dabbing the backs of shirts with a dye that only became visible under UV light? The 4th official could run on and scan defenders after every set piece.

How about referees having some balls and some backup from the FA?

This isn't necessarily a solution, but rugby shirts (well, the ones that are used by professional rugby teams - Premiership & national level) are now made of very close fitting material, so it's very difficult to get a handful of an opponent's shirt. If football shirts were similarly made, of close fitting, stretchy material, then it would be hard work for opposing players to hold on to shirts. Either that, or play in skins, possibly painted to differentiate the teams. It would probably get Fran's vote.

Ha ha. I've been saying the same thing.

The fact is though that the refs see what is going on but right now they choose to ignore it because they are worried about the number of penalties etc. Even if the refs don't see it, the cameras do so it would be very easy to punish the guilty if there was a will. But, there clearly isn't. Why not? I don't know. Think how long it took to get goal-line technology.

We will get there eventually, I just hope it will be in my lifetime!

A solution? These 90's Global Hypercolour T-shirts could somehow be linked up to the heat map, for the 4th official to have a detailed overview of onfield intimacy.

Referees spot every other shirt pulling incidents and book the perpetrators.
They only go blind during corners and free kicks where delivery is into the box
Can be very easily sorted if the footballing authorities had the balls to instruct the refs to penalise the wrestling matches that aren't permitted anywhere else
    Simples!
