We all know that the price tag on a player is to do with the business side of football, and is nothing to do with the players themselves.
Still, any available stick to beat someone you don't like, eh?

Benteke watch: sets up sitters for Firmino and Milner which they miss before we have to rely on a lucky Rooney-style rebound to Lallana

I think there is a relevance. Grujic was £5mill. At that price, no one is expecting a key member of the squad so no one is going to be upset if he turns out to be only good enough as a backup player on the bench.

If you hit £20+ mill you expect the player to be brought in is intended to be a key player for the team.

So Grujic, is going to be compared to a squad player when he arrives-so if he makes the strongest XI, fans will be thrilled because most people arnt expecting him to make an immediate impact.

At £30mill Benteke was expected to be a first team player. That's he only good enough for the bench is obviously going to frustrate people because we could have got a key player for the team with that money.

If we payed half the price I think people would be happy we would have a decent backup option/plan b, who is technically weak but scores the occasional goal. I don't think we'd be having daily Benteke discussions if he were a £12mill signing.

It's not that Benteke is too bad to play for Liverpool. He's not. He has his uses. Its that he didn't meet expectations of being a first team player, and for his price we could have brought someone else in who potentially could have met those expectations.

The price is determined by the selling club and the buying club, plus some influence from the likes of the FA making rules about homegrown etc.

The player has literally **** all say about the price

You'd have more of a case criticising players based on the wages they ask for than the fee their previous club asked for

For £20m+ I'd expect a player who can do something to change the result of a game. Which Benteke has done. Several times.

I'm not criticising Benteke for what he cost. I'm criticising Liverpool for buying a squad player for a top price instead of a top player. If we had bought a top player instead we would be in top 4.

My point is, no one would be criticising Benteke if he had been brought in as backup. He's decent backup. People are criticising him because he was brought in to be a key member of the team. He's not good enough to be a core member of the team.

He is decent backup and not too shabby playing against teams that leave space.

I like that we bought Benteke. I prefer to call him an option than backup. We don't have anyone else like him and he can do many jobs.

It's worth £30m just so opposition teams can't assume we'll set up with 11 small players who can't break down an organised defence. Last season every opponent knew our lineup, our subs, and our weaknesses a month in advance.

I think the idiotic bashing reflects on those who know ****he all about football.

I was watching palace v spurs laughing as spurs should have let in 4 with the chances they caught up and then Kane was stood static on a cb.... and the ball is tossed up and he just then moved... what benteke is accused of and cos place are shot it was a goal.

The reality is we are piss poor team with snobbish fans who've decided before he put on a red shirt that he didn't fit.

without Benteke we'd be a fair bit further down the table. Nearer Chelsea <yikes> It wasn't his fault we conceded three when he scored his worldie at OT

No we would not... jeez milk. We bought firmino for 29mil too. We simply are not good enough period right around the pitch to be top 4... we never were and we a damned lucky to have tossed Rodgers and got klopp as a result.

None of which is bentekes fault.

In case you guys missed it the queue is already forming for him... and we won't loose much if we do sell but we will regret it

Benteke has won us 10 points in 20 appearances

We'd be below Chelsea without those

  14. The price tag means ****all. Especially when the manager wasn't at the club when the player was signed. It's a number from history, all that matters is how the player performs.

No surprise that we would be below Chelsea if we played with ten men.

RvP offered nothing in many games but got goals, invisible for 80 minutes and gets a brace, because he got good service. Not directly comparing the two

Benteke not so much, he got better service at Villa for ****s sake

We bought a player type and now complain his type is wrong. If we play him we need to play to his strengths. As Villa did.

Why not buy a paint brush and complain when you can't change the TV channel with it <whistle>

No we whine cos we are snobs who think we deserve Messi neymar and suarez for 5p and if we bought Messi for 20m8l he would be a failure if he only got 50 goals it seems.

    <whistle>

It says it all that this little honeypot of mine was not ignored by some... just like the Flanagan one.

They could have stuck to match threads etc but have to go out of their way to have a go at every opportunity.... and in doing so betray ignorance of the game.
