Also, when you watch the replay, look how many United players are pulling Southampton shirts. How we didn't win any penalties, I'll never know. Crazy stuff.
Sorry from reading the whole thread back this is the one that echoes my sentiments. To all those questioning what Charlie Austin would bring. He just didn't get lucky there to be unmarked. He did exactly as he did in the goal for QPR against Hull that has been played non stop all day. Moved to the front post stopped, got his space...............GOAL and that is why I have been so excited about us signing him. He has that instinct and will help inspire all our youngsters like Le Tiss helped Beattie etc. Clasie MOTM - Sensational first half performance and far from LVG trying to put more attack in his midfield he had to because he had given up the physical battle. Fellaini was beaten very very early on by Wanyama way before the elbow. Close runners for MOTM Shane Long who was like 2 men possessed and Jose Fonte who at long last put in the ultimate captain's performance and a good old centre back away from home ROW Z VVD FFS!!!! Well chuffed, been a sensational day. Going to take the greyhound out for a celebrationary walk now.
There was a cluster of players - Fonte pushed towards the near post and VVD pulled to the back post and CA peeled off into the gap between - showing good instinct to find open space.
No, you are correct. Austin stopped. But someone should have still been marking him. Long is actually pretty good at that move himself. I've seen him do it a couple of times. He just doesn't score.
I thought Mane played well. And unlike last game, you really can't knock him for not scoring. I guess people are pointing at that play in the first half, but that was actually almost a great goal. He timed his run perfectly, but the way the ball arrived it was hard to control at the pace he was going. It would have required a fantastic first touch. And he almost pulled it off, too. I think that ball just barely clipped his hip when he tried to bring it under control. That's why he ended up looking stupid. He had to try and pull it back and then blast it by the keeper all in sort of one long, controlled move. The ball just squirted away from him in mid-move so he looked especially awkward not finishing.
As I wrote earlier - he seems off his game at present. Not sure what is going on their. Hopefully his form will pick up soon - we need his directness.
With Mane out of form, that's Charlie's starting ticket. RK can't drop Shane Long at the moment as he is playing so well....Long vs Mertasake...Lol (sorry for the spelling)
Actually, I am not saying he was poor for missing a sitter - that is not what I am writing - I thought he was poor today with his all round play, his ball retention and decision making as poor. Seems out of sorts and his substitution led to us winning.
Love the way Charlie has attached himself to the club....talking about how the one chance fell to Southampton....rather than to him. Talking about our run even though he wasn't here for it.
