eddie jordon pointed out something that i've felt for a while...that is seb vettel is a teriffic front runner but can't seem to overtake when in traffic. at most of the grand prix's he's in front and usually opens a gap that he maintains with ease, but put him in traffic with cars challenging he can't seem to get passed and away. any thoughts on this?
It's quite a commonly held view and today just reinforced it. My theory is that his luxury of leading so much is arresting his development as a complete driver: i.e. he doesn't have to fight much so he doesn't learn much about how to fight. Anyway, now we can see that the much-maligned Massa is better than Vettel in a straight fight. He couldn't cope with Alonso either.
he also couldnt get passed lewis in the last race.he doesnt look comfortable atall when attemping to overtake,so he lacks bravery.
Brakes, schmakes. There's always an excuse from Horner. At Silverstone, he said Seb's Kers failed but the footage proved that wasn't true.
He didn't get in a position to try, and his team, wisely, told him 10 points are better than 0, especially when trying to overtake his title rivals rather erratic driving sacrificial lamb, + he seemed to have a problem during the first part of the race. Showed more maturity than others of more years to finish the race and score what could be WDC winning points.
I don't agree. Ferrari were having tyre struggles but both cars held him off. Horner just won't admit that Seb isn't perfect.
Everyone makes mistakes this was just a poor race from Vettel, he will be back and soon and gain more wins if he can get his race head back on.
We know how dominant Red Bull were at Hungary last year and in hot temperatures they seem to excel much differently to the Mclarens. I see him being back on the podium next week.
thats not what the question is about. if he gets his head right and at the front of the grid he'll probably run away with it again, this is about him not being able to pass when he's stuck behind someone.
I agree, although I think the red bulls lack if grunt is hindering it's overtaking potential, Webber has suffered the same! However, I think it's ironic that Button go a Hugh amount of criticism for collecting points in a car that was much weaker than the red bull in the 2nd part of the season!
Maybe he is deprived of wheel to wheel racing, the opposite is occurring with Schumacher at the moment. A driver learns something new every race, no one is perfect.
I think Vettel has had his wings clipped before viewing figures take a dive like they did under Schuey's domination. Good. Next race will be a straight fight between Alonso and the Red Bulls, and I can't see Vettel being able to take the fight to Alonso when he is looking so up for it. What did I say in a previous post? Pampered little prince. If he does not have the fastest car then Vettel is chopped liver.
Vettel's racecraft has always been in question but his speed when he is out in front is scintillating. He is very very quick but he is not so good in a fight: even Massa had the better of him today.
So what overtakes did Webber do then? Apart from Lewis making a mistake at the 2nd to last corner he also did piss poor at overtaking. Mark was stuck behind Lewis for about 10 laps, all within a second. All of his passes were also in the pits and the undercut. Face it, it's harder to overtake in a Red Bull than it is in a McLaren or a Ferrari.
<yawn> Alonso and Hamilton have yet to score a pole this season, does that mean they're poor qualifiers? The Red Bull is strong in the corners, weak on the straights. Even the Virgins were faster yesterday. Their aero advantage is negated in the turbulent air meaning they're left with one of the slowest cars. When Vettel was following Massa he had the DRS activated and was stuck on the limiter while Massa edged further ahead, it's impossible to overtake under those circumstances. It seems when Vettel drives well it's the car, when he drives bad it's the driver. Also, look at how long Button (arguably the driver with the best racecraft on the grid) spent wedged in behind the much slower Petrov. If a driver has a straightline advantage all they have to do is keep it on the road and position it well defensively.
