Just an extension of the on going beel from the Bowie thread.

Is it worth getting a degree? Does it necessarily make you intelligent?

"Intelligence has been defined in many different ways including one's capacity for logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning, creativity and problem solving."

Are you a staunch "I've been to the University of Life" sort?

I would encourage anyone with the opportunity and ability to go for a degree as it opens the door to many high powered and well funded jobs. It has to be said that not every graduate is the sharpest Stanley in the toolbox but that may be down to the subject matter of the degree.

Employers get the hump when they take on a graduate who can't seem to wipe his or her own posterior (with or without a wet wipe, see previous thread) but expect big bucks. The real kick in the nads is the severe debt students get into which can take years to clear off but maybe you have to speculate (not to be confused with speculum) to accumulate.

I have a 2:1 Bsc and the degree has meant I've been successful in getting a couple of decently paid jobs but I think it helped having a specific job related qualification rather than something vague like Sociology or Media Studies. Not wanting to sound like a snob but those are the sorts of degrees divs usually go for as there aren't any absolute answers just matters of opinion and your coursework can all be cut and pasted from Hello magazine.

I have an electronic engineering degree, so yes, having a degree makes you smart. In fact no, I was smart before I got my degree, so getting a degree doesn't make you smart

I've got a BA 2:1 in business stuidies and still earn less than single mother on benefits. Mind, I'm a thick, lazy, obnoxious, misnathropic prick too so that probably explains most of it.
I think much depends on the subject - if I can get a degree in business studies then anyone can.

In order to acquire a degree it is first necessary to become a student, and most students are utter **** stains. So on balance, I would say "**** your degrees, you clueless ****s".

I'm a ****ing idiot. Always have been and always will be. Left school at 16 with a couple of O grades and then went to war.

Luckily I was intelligent enough to get through a few of the world's skirmishes pretty much intact and also get the MOD to pay for some reasonably decent qualifications on the run up to being demobbed.

I own my own 4 bedroom house and drive a convertible and a landrover (not at the same time). My daughter was the first person from my family to go to Uni and has a masters. Her younger brother also went to Uni. My other son is an IT engineer and makes over 20 grand a year at the age of 21 although he never went to Uni.

    The moral of this story?

**** you Toby ya waste of space.

    :D

Intelligence, or lack of it is no barrier to a Degree. The Unis up here are full of trumpets and I've no reason to think the rest of the UK is different.

The UK is full of highly intelligent people without qualifications of any kind, many who run their own businesses. This is self evident.

I wasn't even supposed to do one. ****ed up at school so went to evening classes and when the tutor suggested it four years down the line I thought I may as well. In truth I only did it to undermine people in the office that I did not like. That said, I wouldn't have got one in a proper subject.

Degrees are only any use if they are in Logical Positivism, from the University of Wallaballoo.

What about mature students? I didn't go to university at 18 and wear baggy jumpers & drink snakebite, I was in my 30's when I got my degree. Worked the whole time, in fact I have been gainfully employed since my first paper round at 12 yrs old.

My degree wasn't a memory test, most of it was investigative theory/study, project work etc. Good job too because my memory is shocking and I'd have flunked if I didn't take a couple of crib notes in for the subjects that needed maths. I got a degree but if I have to count over 10 I need to remove a shoe.
